I've seen the mosaic type pins used on a couple of knives posted to different galleries on bladeforums, and I've seen them for sale. But can someone tell me how they're used? I can't figure out how you use them without mashing them up when you hammer them in?

Silly, I know. Sorry. :OD

Dont hammer them! :) Just cut some notches in them and press fit, then sand them even. You cant peen them or they look like hell.

And they hold securely like that? Or are they meant more for aesthetics than function?

Think how much force it would take to shear that pin. Its stronger by far than most handle materials and considering most epoxys would force you to grind a handle off before the bond would fail, i dont think itd ever be an issue. Ive never heard ofa mosaic pin failing. Katanas are held by a non-glued wooden pin and friction.

Thanks for your help clearing that up, got the right mental picture now :O)

Whatever you do don't peen them. After I cracked some expensive fosil ivory I quit peening my handle pins. Make sure you have a tight fit and gently tap your pins in wth a rubber or raw hide mallet. I also epoxy the heck out of my pins just to make sure they don't slip.
