What's the best stuff to ward off the itch and the swelling? (mineral ice works, but I don't wanna carry around that stuff) Benedryl, Camphor or methnol? Thanks!

I'm diabetic, so I don't like scratches, which may turn infected too easily, so I generally carry around alcohol pads. I've found that wiping down a mosquito bite with an alcohol pad will knock out the itch and lead it to heal completely pretty quickly.

"after-bite" is a brand name pen-type applicator. It's a liquid ammonia solution and seems to help significantly. Found in most drug stores etc..

(It's supposed to neutralize acid from the bite, but I dunno if it really penetrates well enough to do that.)

yep use Afterbite, and then about an hour later hydrocortizone cream available from the pharmacist, 0.2% Rub it vigouously so it whips up white. Resist the urge to scratch and put the cream on evey 4 hours or so. I'm British and the mozzies love me!

Because of West Nile Virus you want to avoid bites, so use any repellant with Deet.

Best not to get them at all, this is the best on the market
for those who can stand alot of deet.

Campophenique is used a lot for chigger bites here in Oklahoma and we use it for skeeter bites as well.
Some people, my dear wife is one, suffer a helluva lot more from chigger bites than they do skeeter bites and it's hard to find anything better, didn't/don't know about the Afterbite and will have to try it.
Campophenique does have the camphor smell which some folks find offensive but it does work and works well for most bug bites and small scrapes and cuts.
Walgreen's has a generic form and Wally World probably does as well.

I LOVE Burt's Bees Res-Q ointment!! It is the best stuff I have found to combat bug bites!!

Talking of 'camphor smell' reminds me. My stepdaughter worked in Thailand and she reckoned 'Tiger Balm' in the little red tin took the itch out straight away and speeded up healing.

hydrocortisone cream applied after wiping with alcohol works for me, a few summers ago was on the TX coast fishing and the mosquitos were swarming, have never seen anything like it, on 1 leg i had over 150 bites (and we werent out long.....) i stopped counting at 150, that cant be good for ya let me tell ya. but the hydro cream stopped the itching pretty well once i got some anyway.
