Mossberg 500 fore end not tight

So I bought a Hogue stock and fore end for my Mossberg and I really like it, feels great in the hand and shoulders really well and it's Hogue so it has that nice rubberized texture and keeps the weapon in the hand. But my Mossberg is slightly older maybe from the late 80's maybe the early 90's and the fore end moves forwards and backwards ever so slightly maybe a 1/4 of an inch if just shy of that and it does not keep the gun from functioning at all just when i'm holding it, it just moves forwards and backwards when i'm cycling it. Does anyone know of a way to maybe shim the fore end to get it tight and I have checked and I do have the nut as far as it can go.

I put the same forend on my 1987 Mossberg 500, it's awesome! It's been quite a few years ago, but as I recall, I did have to clean the seating area of the forend and the nut side too with an exacto knife. Not sure if you have a good quality forend wrench, but it significantly helps to fully seat the nut. I bought a wrench from Midway I believe, it's a Baker 12 Ga wrench, part # 723227.

You may need to remove a little more material from the inside-end of the forend, so that it seats itself further down towards the chamber, then crank it down tight with the wrench. I have no play in mine, but there is an inherent small amount of play with the rails themselves. I just took a look at mine and the nut is pretty deep into the forend, with just about 1/8 - 1/4" of it visible and not burried inside the forend. Good thing about the Mossberg, they're not exactly dependent upon tight tolerances.:D

Oh yea, make sure your tube is fully threaded into the receiver, as it's possible for it to back-out a bit while removing the nut.

Yeah I took it off and re tightened it and now it is on snug as it can go. Thank you!

That's great news. The Hogue over molded forend is hands-down the most ergonomic and comfortable forend I've ever used. A friend shot mine one time and immediately bought one for his.

Yeah mine came with the standard wood stock and I soon "upgraded" it to an ATI? pistol grip stock and their fore end and the stock was ergonomic but when you shot it, it would give you a bruise on your cheek if you went through too many boxes in a range session. so I put the wood stock and left the fore end on there so it was a wood and polymer mix and then I ordered the Hogue and love it.
