Hey guys, I accidentally broke the brass front bead sight on my Mossberg 500 smooth bore slug barrel. Any suggestions? Should I just look for another brass bead, or are there better options. It's just kind of a beater shotgun, not used for hunting or clays. Are the Mossberg brass beads readily available, or do I have to go with an aftermarket type? Thanks in advance!

When you say you broke the front bead, is part of the bead still in the barrel? If it is, you may need a gunsmith to drill it out and retap it. If not, you can order it direct from Mossberg. Who know, if you call them they may even just send you a new bead. I've read where they've done that before. Here's a link for the front bead on Mossberg's site:

Brownell's also has the bead.

As far as other options, what length barrel is it? Is it the 18.5" smooth bore barrel, 20", or 28" Accu-Choke barrel? If it's the 18.5" barrel (or 20" if you have the 8 shot 500), and you use it for home defense, you might be interested in a tritium bead. They're a bit pricey, but good for night visibility. People have also put fiber optic sights on the front, too.

I had the same thing happen on a Browning shotgun once.
I just drilled the broken bead threads out. Bought a shotgun brass bead and JB welded it to the barrel.
Still holding up to this day.
JB weld is amazing!

If it were me I would take this opportunity to install a HiViz front sight. Green is easier to see, even in low light, but some prefer red. They even make them magnetic in case you do not want to permanently install them. They make rear sights, too. These things light up in the woods or field like you would not believe.

If you call Mossberg they will send you a new one for free . Had the same happen. I have truglo's on all my shotguns now. Bigger/brighter sights. My Moss 930 came with truglo on and since then converted.

I replaced the bead on my 500 with a HiVis sight with the interchangeable tubes. Same setup I have used on my bird guns for years.

After being on hold for 20 minutes and explaining my situation to Mossberg's customer service dept., and telling them that I do have a credit card and would like for them to direct me to a local retailer where I could purchase one they just told me that they didn't know anywhere. What a joke!

I have the 835 that came with the small brass bead. After I had shot it I wanted something better/bigger. I looked on the auction website and searched for turkey hunting sights they have many well known makers high visibility options for reasonable prices.

WTH. That's wierd. They just sent me one for free. Maybe they changed their warranty, that was about 3 years ago that i called them. Well, now you can just upgrade to hiviz for not alot of dough and if you want orignal sure somebody sells them on ebay. Don't know many that wouldn't prefer the hiviz optics as too the original beads though.

Update: I called back and spoke to a different customer service representative that, I guess, was having a better day. She offered to send me one at no charge. Thanks for all of your help guys! I may still look at some of the upgrades, but at least I'll have something back on my gun in the meantime.

:D Yeah I've had that happen before. Best to try twice just incase you got a miserable CS op. Mossberg's a great company and makes great shottys. I don't care who says what. I don't think I'll end up with one of there rifles though from things I've heard/handled in store. Their shotguns though far exceeded my expectations. Even there semi autos are fantastic. Haven't had a problem except the sight on 500 cruiser. I've had the same happen with a Remington 870.

Yeah, I'm a fan of their shotguns also. I'm glad that they're taking care of the problem. I own 4 and am considering another one for my 10 year old son.
