Anyone have any opinions comparing late model Mossy 590 Marines to Rem 870 Marines? Coating durability? Is the Rem built to the "Express" standard (blech) or closer to Police/Wingmaster? I'm interested in picking one up as a just-in-case/SHTF gun. Thanks.

I have the 870MM and love it. Very reliable. I too bought the marine model for SHTF. Put a Knoxx stock on mine. I've never handled the 590 marine but would have no problem using that over my 870, I just found my 870 for cheap. The little magazine cover can be a little annoying at times but I've pretty much practiced to the point where I don't notice it while loading shells.

I have an older model 870 Wingmaster and love it, and have no problems loading it. All other things equal, the only thing I wouldn't like about it as a SHTF gun is that cross-bolt safety. I like how the Mossy's safety is up top.

TBH, the safety isn't much of a problem for me. I do agree the tang safety is pretty awesome.

I don't own the Remington, but do have the Marinecote 590.

1. The coating is extremely durable, much more so than Parkerizing(but it is easy to apply Duracoat, and that is probably as durable as Marinecote(nickel)).

2. The internals are coated in Marinecote as well, which is really nice.

3. I suppose that you can tinker with just about any firearm as much as you want, but my 590 is earlier, and I replaced the tang safety button with steel, and the trigger housing with an aluminum version....and feel this is necessary on both. Ghost ring sights are also FAIRLY necessary, but not totally required.

YMMV...they are both good guns, I just prefer Mossberg.

our motors carry the 870 marine due to element exposure and care requirements for a standard 870.

ours are exactly like the police magnum except for coating.

I've owned a Rem. 870MM for almost 20 years, never had a problem with mine. It should be the same as the police model + nickle coating. No problem with the nickle coating or excessive wear anywhere on it, although there is a permanent scorch mark on the mag tube below the muzzle on mine. There are plenty of Remingtons with over 200K rounds fired from them, it just makes them smoother.

I doubt that the Mossberg would serve any less adequately though.

Just pattern your shotgun at the ranges you plan on firing them with you choice of loads and you're good to go.

If that's still the case, it's a no-brainer for me. I worry that it's an Express with nickel-coated parts. Looks like there's another possible option coming out - the Browning BPS All-Weather High Capacity. Everyone that shoots those BPSes loves them. One of my go-to shops has stopped carrying 870s in favor of the BPS - he said it's difficult to order enough Wingmasters and the Express is just crap. He had a new 1100 fall apart on him at the skeet range last year.
