Most Commonly Found Decent Modern Folder

I imagine a similar thread already exists on this topic but I looked and looked and couldn't find one. I'm going to be taking a plan trip to the east coast and my luggage is carry on, so no knives will come with me. My plan is to buy a decent folder ($30 max) then mail it back to Oregon at the end of the trip. I will be in the Baltimore MA area but I don't know that I will have the transportation available to hit a local shop. So my thought is that whatever I guy will be from a big box store.

I generally stay away from buying knives at these stores. I'm not really interested in Gerber Bear Grylls (Grills?) seris, and though I like the look of the leatherman crater, which is pretty much everywhere, I blade forum review gave it a pretty poor review. I imagine there will be a lot of SAK suggestions, but I already have 3 of those that I like. I'm looking for something along the lines of:

Anything Kershaw,
Rat 1
Utilitac 2
Zancudo
Cold Steel tuff-lite, or voyager
Almost anything buck

Do any big box stores sell these items or is there an east coast version of Bi-Mart or Coastal Farm and Feed to buy decent production knives?
Thanks for any suggestions,
BD

From what I have seen, you're most likely to find Bucks and Kershaws at places like Wallyworld. You might have a better selection at dedicated sporting goods stores like Dicks, Sports Authority or Bass Pro Shop. Gun stores can have higher end stuff like ZTs, Benchmades, and even CRK, but you will be paying around MSRP.

I would just pick up a good looking Kershaw.

Bass Pro Shop sells Kershaws but they are marked up too high.

For just about all those knives your best bet is EBay or Amazon if you want a good price & no sales tax. If you need to see the knife before you buy, try the hunting type stores.

Kershaw will be at the Bi-Mart-like places. If you can find a Sportsman's Warehouse or REI, you could definitely procure a Griptilian. The only Sportsman's Warehouse I've been to here in Oregon even had Spyderco, so it's not unimaginable that they would have them over yonder.

I'm not on the east coast, but I've seen a number of the lower-line Kershaws and CRKTs at my local Lowes in the $30 price range.
Does wallyworld still carry skylines, leeks and blurs?

Blurs and occasionally Leeks. My brother picked up a Skyline at Wally for a friend a few years ago. Haven't seen them since. This is Florida I'm referring to, that may differ from place to place.

I should specify. I'm from Oregon Traveling to the Baltimore Maryland. Kershaw, Gerber, BM, CRKT are all Oregon knife companies but are also pretty big companies. I figured they would be easy to find in Oregon but wasn't sure if they would be making it over to the East coast with the same availability. I'm only there for a week so buying online is not an option. Plus this exercise gives me a fun thing to do while I'm there. They do indeed have a Dick's in Baltimore.

I dunno about the east coast, but at the Walmarts around here, in your $30 price range they have the Buck 110, a couple of Kershaws(Kuro and Shuffle are the ones they have in your range, they carry the Leek and Blur but they're like $50+), and that's about it other than some crappy Gerbers. If you can find an Academy Sports & Outdoors, they have a bigger selection of Kershaws and Bucks in that $30 range.

Wallyworld here in NC stock the kershaw Kuro, cryo and shuffle. The buck slimline and at least one camillus for right around or under that price range. You could head to their website and see which is available for in-store pick up in the zip you're traveling to. Same goes for lowes, Home Depot and a few others.

I'm in Texas and we have Academy stores all over the place. I don't know if they're as ubiquitous on the east coast, but they do have Kershaws and Bucks as well as Gerber and Remington, and they have recently started carrying Cold Steel knives (I've seen med and large Voyagers).

I don't know where you're staying, but I've traveled on orders before where I only took carry on. I've done this once, and it worked perfectly: Buy whatever you want and ship it from the seller to the hotel, base, whatever. Just tell them you'll be doing that. The hotel I stayed at got the knife (box) two days before I got there, they didn't seem to care. Handed it to me when I checked in. Shipped it back home when travel complete.

Walmart, Menards, Lowes all have some kershaws. Wally may have a buck 119 and lowes and menards may have some crkt as well.

I'd get a spyderco ladybug

He has to find one for sale, and he's looking for stuff you can find in big box stores...at least around here, the only place you'll find Spyderco is at House of Blades, a dedicated knife store. You won't find the Ladybug(or any other Spyderco) at places like Walmart, Academy, Lowes, etc...and if you do, it's probably gonna be closer to MSRP, which would put it out of that $30 range he's looking to spend anyway.

If you're staying at a hotel, ship something of your choice there and have it held for you. Hotels do it all the time. Motels, maybe not. Or you can have it sent to a post office as general delivery for you to pick up with ID. That's the trick Appalachian trail through hikers use to cut down on the gear they carry. They ship things they're not going to use on the next leg forward on their route and pick it up at the PO, as well as have their families arrange supply drops.

I live in Maryland, and I'd do some serious checking in knife laws particularly in and around Baltimore. Assisted knives are not always legal, and in some parts of the city, there are length restrictions. Just a heads up.

However, I'd probably just hit walmart for a beater EDC, and either ship it home or give it to a friend you make during your stay.
