There's been a few good threads about the Cold Steel Recon 1, and in one of them I posted a mock-up of what I really wanted from that knife (tanto version). I also said I'd ordered it and would mod it...
It arrived today, I took it out of the box and within one minute...

I WAS SCRAPING THE SECONDARY TIP OVER THE CONCRETE TILES IN MY GUARDEN!

AUS8A is pretty soft, I kept checking the temperature of the blade (it gets hot REAL quick) and within 10 minutes or so, the silhouette was how I wanted it.
Then on the Edge Pro to put the edge back on it. That took another half hour.
Final result:

Still pristine here...

I didn't completely reprofile the blade, and left the grid at 220 for now. I'm gonna strip the paint off next, and then put a truly nasty edge on it.
I absolutely LOVE the way the blade looks now. It's pretty much a spanto, like my XM-18. I am STOKED!

Gotta respect a guy that grinds a blade on concrete....(I'm not weeerrrrrttthhhyyy)

Hey, when you're at the point where you're just removing metal, anything that doesn't get too hot is good enough. I use a file all the time. Only come edge time do you worry.

Dang, man, that's a very good-looking mod, it looks much better now that it did stock. Probably much more usable as well. I'm a pansy, I would have headed straight for the belt grinder for a mod like that, I've gotta hand it to you for the excellent concrete-work! Keep us updated as you strip the coating and the rest, looks like you've got a great project there. :)

Yeah, that's what I found. I figured that once it looked good from the side (silhouette), 'all' I had to do was regrind the edge, as it was about 2mm wide now! Took about a 120 or so swipes on both sides with the coarse stone before I could move to the medium (220 grid).

Been there done that, but I used a cheap double sided bench stone.

Can't wait to see what ends up lookin' like.

How are you going to strip the paint off it i have a Cold Steel Ak47 and wish to remove the paint(half of it is gone from use) and put a mirror polish on it How would i go about doing this. Great looking blade btw :)

Great mod!

Looks like Rat-1 with Tri-Ad lock  !
Not hardly. ;) It looks and is a lot fatter, bigger and tougher.

Here's some pics after basic stripping. I ended up doing it with another knife. 15-minute job. :)

Tomorrow I'll clean it and put a serious edge on it. Then I should send it to Cold Steel as a prototype... :D

wow 2012 recon 1? :D good job m8.
im fan of tantos and have recon 1 tanto but this looks wicked.especially with stripped blade.kinda emerson feeling.(better than them thought)
cold steel should make a recon 1 with a higher end steel ,dlc coating (at least offer stone washed finish) and this type of blade shape.i know its gonna be expensive but sure gonna sell like crazy :D

After those last pics, I'm having trouble keeping my hands off my SOG Trident Tanto. The only thing holding me back is all the time I invested carefully polishing (most of) the blade to a mirror finish.

Must resist. Must re... Aww heck! Time to layout the new profile to see how it will look. ;)

I like it, the blade looks pretty cool striped like that it almost has a stonewashed look to it.
