For those of you who have been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan what were the most popular carry blades both fixed, folder and multi-tool?

Also if you are deploying what are you planning on packing?

will,

The multi-tools are by far the most common knife/tool found in military use. The fixed and folders knives found at the PX/BX are the most popular. You may find more detailed info onthis subject if you perform a search, as this has been discussed before. Good luck.

Not to be a smart-ass, but probably whatever is free. Bayonets, some autos to certain troops, ect.

I would expect that Spyderco Delica/Enduras, CRKT M16s, and assorted multitools/SAKs to be the most common. Probably a lot of Buck 110s too, since the kind of people who become soldiers are often the kind of people who grew up using a 110.

from waht I hear from some people that are getting ready to go over their knives are being taken away, one said that they took away all their big knives do to the fact that one cut himself, also that they can not have knives hidden on their bodys they have to be all out in the open for everyone to see.I wanted to send them all a knife to wear as a last ditch weapon but they wouldn't be able to carry it without getting into hot water, our wonderful leaders at their best.

I work at the PX at Ft. Myers. Its the Buck 110 and 112 for the simple reason of money. You can pick up a 110 for $20.

I was never deployed to the sandbox but I was in other places overseas. The most consistant multi-tools I saw were Gerber Multi-Pliers and Leathermans. The synthetic handled delicas and enduras (BX item) were probably the most common folder, the S&W Tactical models (unit lot buys) were abundant and for some reason the BM Auto-Stryker (a lot of units buy them in small lots). The most common fixed blade by far was the Cammilus version of the FUK. Some of the S&W and Gerber boot knives.....basically whatever the hell the BXs were selling. I saw one Senior NCO carrying a Strider Fixed blade once. Among the more gear oriented guys you see a wider variety of stuff, attuned to that individuals percieved needs, personal fantasy world or whatever.

That just seems stupid to me!!

I am in the Air Force and we got issued auto strykers. Why, I do not know. Leathermans, Gerber Multi tools, are the main tools. Knives are whatever you can find, or afford. I did not want my knives confiscated when I left for over here so I did not bring one. The BX carries knives, but they do not last long in there. Once they are in, they are gone. Grab what you can while you can. If you are lucky enough, you get some kind of blade issued to you.

The CS SRK, SOG SEAL Pup, and the Kabar are the most popular fixed blades and CRKT and Gerber for folders. We have had no restrictions on knives while in Iraq. We were not allowed to wear knives strapped to the leg or boot while in Kuwait unless it was under the DCU pants. Being a knife guy before getting here I was somewhat disappointed in not seeing all the cool knives the knife mags were saying troops were carrying. I'm with the 1st Cav and we have a huge contingent of 82nd Abn and 10th Mtn on the FOB we operate from and I have yet to see a Strider, Tops, or other higer end knife except for several CRK GBs. We were issued the M9 bayonet and Gerber multiplier and private purchase autos are popular also. Really not that many Syderco's and Buck folders. Woodsman, sorry but your FOS, dont pass on info unless you get it from someone who was actually here.

sorry, the two people that I personally know are getting ready to go over right after christmas but they are not there yet they are just telling me what they have been told by the people over them, one is a cousin and we have ran the woods alot over the years so if they took his blade it is so, but maybe they get them back over there but he sure has said alot about how he never holds his breath about getting his knife back or about other thinks they say they will get.

I had an airforce bud and for graduation i wanted to get him a nice knife. I bought a commander and waited for him to get a permenant address. He got out to cali for school, and thent old me that he had to have under a 3" blade...so I kept the commander and sent him a tanto griptilian. When he gets a rule change, he's getting a better, bigger knife.
