Spyderco...first thing that comes to my mind when Im thinking about collectible productions. I see that alot of rare prod knives on ebay are mostly spydies.

Spyderco always comes out with so many variations and with so limited number of certain knives that they are on the top of my list.

Any other opinions?

Much as I love Spyderco, I'd have to say Case. They go out of their way to make variations on a theme. They make some of their patterns in CV, with the occasional special run of ATS-34 (as collectible specials) for those of us that prefer such things. However, with 420HC and any number of colors and materials in the handles, they are putting more effort into the looks and variety.

I vote spyderco too. They seem to enjoy the one offs. Just from Sal's posts here you can tell hes a knife guy who enjoys his trade and not just a salesman.

It seems to me that Case, more than any other manufacturer, promotes its knifes as both collectibles and users. Spyderco knives, while certainly collectible in their many variations, are marketed more as users.

I'll also go out on the proverbial limb and throw out SAK. Their history, evolution and many variations certainly appeal to a lot of collectors.

We're fortunate in that so many of the knives available to us can be BOTH collectible and used.

I agree. It has been my observation that the most collectible knives are ones that were intended to be users in the first place. The ones that are put out as "collectors editions" these days end up being less valuable than the ones that have become collectible by accident. Examples - the Case V42 knife was produced to be used -and was used - the result being very few left in any kind of good condition, regularly bringing prices over $3000 for examples in just decent shape. As for a current production knife, an example is Busse Combat knives. A straight-handled Battle Mistress or Steel Heart, produced with the sole purpose of being heavily used, commands a premium now after only a few years due to the relative rarity of finding one in unused condition. I have seen "collectors edition" knives sit in the for-sale forum without anyone biting on them, two from recent memory being a commemmorative Gerber Mark II and a collectors edition reproduction Case V44 Machete.

Buck gets my vote... the model 110 is the most popular collector available
today in 440,BG42,ATS32,S30V,mirror polished 440, Damascus ,acid etched, gold etched, titanium coated, and numerous handle materials, mother of pearl, jade, turquoise, redcoral, aluminum, brass, silver,,cherry ,oak, mahagony, orange figi, mastadon ivory, elephant ivory, buffalo horn, elk, black micatrta, and several more.Buck has a well organized club BCCI with an inprogress model history and knowlageable people running it.The most valuable no,but variety
unchallenged.

My personal favorite is Spyderco.

That said, I would think that Case is more popular. Huge variations on materials and limited runs. I also believe that Case is more known among non-knifenuts than Spyderco.

I'm not sure if Case Knives are the most "collectible" but I think it's pretty safe to say that they are far and away the most "collected" knives out there.

As for myself, I inadvertantly become a Spyderco collecter several years ago - not because I intended to collect them but because I liked their quality and durability. Some of them have appreciated in value quite nicely over the years - I've recently seen a Spyderco Mouse on ebay go for over 220 bucks.

Spydercos are very collectable because there's so many unique models and special runs. Then you get into the Q collectors...

A lot of the older people are non tactical but almost everyone you talk to has a Case XX in there collection. Most non tactical people would sell a Spyderco for $5 because they dont know any better and if it has Japan on it. If it is a Tactical Collector than Spyderco and Benchmade are some of the top collectors. THANK YOU! Kevin

AL Mar all the way.
Gerber Mark II along with other popular blades from the last 20-30 years.
Blackjack knives (pre and post Effingham years).

Curiosity yields evolution...satiety yields extinction.

Seriously.

Then Case.

If you are talking about knife people, divide it up between Spyderco, Buck, Gerber and Al Mar.

Hey Guys....

There are many companys that are highly collectable..That's what makes knife collecting so much fun..
How boring would it be to collect only one brand of knife...

There was a post here years ago from a guy who collected Franklin Mint knives..As I remember he had a pretty extensive collection...

I think he was pretty frustrated and deeply saddened to find out they are Completely worthless here in the Real world of collector knives...
