Hey Guys, I want to see what others say about this as I'm sure many have a similar experience. When you're asked to recommend a knife which do you go with? I always ask about price range first then depending on that I go: RAT 1/ Utilitac II, American Lawman, PM 2, 0560,
There are other knives that I love but I just find these to be good general use blades for the guy who's only getting one. I of course need to have them all.

Assuming cost is the only factor (ie I can say any type of materials), carbon Opinel, Rat1/2, Blur, Premium steel Blur/PM2, BM707/ZT0550/Gayle Bradly, ZT0801, Bad Monkey. Over $300 is where I think diminishing returns in the cost/value calculus really kicks in so, IMO if your budget is above that just buy what looks the most awesome to you!

all prices and materials aside (too many variables to list) my most commonly recommended knives are:
fallkniven F1 for a small bush knife
Ka-Bar original for a larger cheaper bush knife
Swiss army soldier for a small pocket folder
lately the lone wolf landslide for a locking folder.
I have used em all quite extensively and think they are all great for their application.

Rat 1 or Rat 2 for most people. Simply put, they're available off the shelf at a couple local stores, and they're inexpensive.

If they've thought enough to have price points other than "...but I don't want to spend money", then I'd start with cookie cutters like Delica, Grip, PM2, 0562.

Most commonly recommended in general for me is the RAT1. Second is the Vic Pioneer.
Those two are to people I know though, and the price range and the needs of the person all change what I recommend significantly in most cases. I have gotten into a habit of avoiding recommending as many of the ZT, BM, and Spyderco knives, but only because I haven't owned one from any of those 3 in several months.

I tend to only recommend things I have bought and really loved, because I can stare at a picture and read stats all day and still have no idea how good the knife is.

If I'm honest, I think the knife I actually recommend the most to people is a Shirogorov...just not in everyone's price range ;) :p
I usually stick to recommendations that are in the higher-end production or more, just because that's where my collection has been lately.

Spyderco Dragonfly, delica, manix 2.

I find that people looking for higher priced knives have usually been into it for a while and aren't looking for a recommendation. So I usually suggest an Endura or Delica for the rest. If they think those are too much money, I suggest a Rat1.

The main questions I ask are:
1. Use
2. Size
3. Price

From there it can be anything under the sun.

This is more or less what I usually recommend. As you can see, I'm not too into folders, and my budget kind of tops out around ~$70 :/.

  • Opinel
  • Mora
  • Svord Peasant
  • Condor Bushlore
  • RAT 1/2
  • Becker BK16

I find myself recommending Vic Cadets and the Kershaw/Emersons a lot. I don't know many people who really want to pay more than that for knives, and no one who carries a fixed blade regularly.

Gotta separate it by price ranges, not everyone is ready to drop $150 on a Benchmade or $400 on a Sebenza.

<$35 Victorinox Tinker, 1H Trekker, Leatherman Skeletool
$35 ESEE Zancudo
$55 Spyderco Delica
$100 Spyderco Manix 2 or Paramilitary 2
$150 Emerson CQC-7 or Benchmade
$200 Other Emersons or Benchmades
$400+ Strider SnG, CRK Sebenza, etc.
