I just thought i would pick the brains of some Spyderco enthusiasts. I have a tenacious and like it a lot but want to buy something with a better blade steel. Which Spyderco is the most similar in shape and length to the tenacious?

Probably the Manix 2

It is the bottom knife in the photo the top one is the Paramilitary. This Manix 2 one was reground by Tom Krein. The stock blade is a little thicker and saber ground. Spyderco made a flatground S90V blade with carbon fiber handles in a limited run, I think.

The Sage I with carbon fiber scales is very close in size, and similar in shape to the Tenacious. The blade steel is S30V, but it is more of a drop-point shape. The top of the blade comes down a lot more than the Tenacious.

It is also a liner lock, and runs about 105 to 115 bucks street price.

Para is pretty darned close too. Better steel and comp lock but only tip down carry.

These two are my current EDC setup. They're sized about the same and both have liner locks, but there are a lot of little differences too.

Sage I uses a wire clip, has less belly on the blade due to difference in blade shape, has a finger choil and a shorter blade so you lose about 1/2 inch of cutting surface and lacks a lanyard hole. Sage I also has finer jimping and the differences in scale and blade material's been mentioned.

To me, the Sage I is like a marriage between a Caly 3 and the Tenacious with CF scales and the wire clip thrown in for good measure. I find that Sal took the best features of several knives and merged them into one fine knife.

The Manix 2 is a noticeably chunkier and heavier knife, but is still a good knife. I'd personally go along with the Sage I (or II) crowd, much better for EDC. It is a tad bit shorter (although so is the Manix) but the handle is much more ergonomic and I think you'd find it to fit your hand better. Blade steel is pretty much at the top of the 'standard higher-end' of cutlery steels in use today. price is absolutely phenomenal for what you get. The Sage II is the best finished Spyderco I have ever held and the Sage I is just as good from what I hear.

I call the Tenacious the poor man's Sage. There's a lot of room for upgrade, mainly the steel, on the Tenacious. Increasing the price by $10-15 for VG-10 would still make it one of the best bargains out there.

Love the ergos on the Ten. It's also a smooth as silk deployer.
