Who do you think is CURRENTLY the most under rated and/or under priced maker of today? The recent threads on Greco lead me to believe he would be in the running. And of course Newt Livesay!

Does Drew Gleason count?

Drew Gleason? Forgive my ignorance but I have never heard of him. I am about to do a search. He isn't you is he Jackyl? Oh, he's Corduroy of Little Bear Knives.

He does do pretty work from what I've seen. Are his prices that low? Because his work gets high ratings on the Forum.

For those who know, Bob Dozier. Check out the great write up on his newest folder and some nice pics of his fix blades in the latest issue of TK magazine.

I really like Lynn Griffiths work. A real up and comer, I just came home to my new Marksman. White Micarta handle scales with a red liner, fit and finish is perfect. Only shaved part of an arm with it so far, but he does great things with ATS-34 so I will have to put it to the test soon. More to follow on this knife, and lots more to come from this maker.

Me!!!! I under rate my work all the time. One of these days I'm gonna realize that I make good quality knives and then I might be able to charge what they're worth!! Take care!! Michael

Chuck Hallberg is on my list of underpriced makers.....

I think that value requires more than just a low price. I requires a good quality to price ratio. From what I have heard that describes Neil Blackwood (Dr. Lathe). I do not yet own one of his knives, so I can only go by what I know from talking extensively with Neil, and the great comments I have heard about his work. I have ordered a Tanto from him, and he has told me it will ship out sometime this week. I will post a review of it when I get it.

PS Thank you, St. James for mentioning me. You are a great friend, and I appreciate that.

Nakano 2,

I don't think Dozier is underrated. Under priced, maybe, but those who are familiar with his stuff know it rocks. I really like his new double integral lock folders.

Lynn Griffith's stuff is very good. He taught me a good lesson about carrying in kydex at the Tulsa show.

I met a local part time maker who you have never heard of who makes the best slip joints I have ever seen. Problem is he only makes them part time at the rate of less than one a month. He puts about 80 hours into each and does everything by hand. Every one he makes is sold before he gets it done and he doesn't even have any examples I could post. This is the kind of guy you need to find. He will never be famous, as his output is too low, but his quality is fantastic.

I would use the term "up and coming" vs "under rated". Included in that list would be:
Matt Lamey (forum mbr)
Drew Gleason (forum mbr)
Lynn Griffith (forum mbr)

All are different types of makers but all do great work!

Mike Irie is my personal pick. His workmanship is superb and his prices are low. He doesn't have a website.

I'm glad for this thread since it has many great leads. I love both the designs and the prices I found when I looked at the link above to the Chuck Hallberg site.

Thanks Lynn,
A while back, my first knife sale to a fellow forum member had me somewhat nervous, knowing that person would be posting a review for 4K plus members to read..... That went well and more orders followed.
Now, with my first sale to another knifemaker, it's starting all over again. AHHHHHHH!!
The Tanto will be on it's way tomorow Lynn, looking forward to your review!!!!!
Neil

Strider,

Jim Siska has been making knives almost 20 years and has a almost 2 year back log. Not to underated.

JD Smith is a ABS Master Smith and Voting Member in the Guild. Again, he has been around well over 10 years.

Both are very well respected and sought after.

Here are a couple more:

Trace Rinaldi and Chris Hatin.

The most under rated knifemaker I know is a man named Wayne Whitley of Chocowinity, NC.
He, IMHO, makes some of the best looking forged blades out there.

Tim Scholl of Angier, NC is another that will someday hit the big time. He has had write ups in magazines and is going for his mastersmith rating in the coming year.

Both of these men deserve to be recognized.
