Same comments as in the "Overrated" thread, except that I'm interested in another fixed blade and am looking forward to your input(s).

The cheap and humble machete. It works for most of the Third world, but somehow fails to meet the wilderness requirements of the First world.

I also think pukkos are underated.

Great utility knives.

When are you going to be in a knife fight anyway?

Add Nepalese khukuris to the list. Mine have taken an unreal amount of abuse and still get the job done.

I think any Buck fixed blade. A hunter in Kodiak recently used his Buck knife to fend off an attacking Kodiak brown a month or so ago. He stabbed it 5 times before the bear retreated. Now that is a knife!

For a small knife, I think the Schrade Sharpfinger is a really great knife that is really under-rated. Well worth the $20.00 you pay for it at the Marts.
The blade is apprx. 3 3/8" long, is upswept, made of 1095 Carbon @ Rc57-59. Total length is about 7". It has textured Delrin handles, an integral finger guard and a leather sheath. The sheath is the only drawback in this package. And even it isn't too bad. It's kinda light but serviceable.
All in all, a good knife at a light price IMHO.

So, what IS the speed of dark?

4Ts is on the money. That $15 Sharpfinger will outskin and outcut better than most of those fancy high end customs. Their carbon steel can be honed to a breathtaking edge!

Well I am going to agree totally with Greg on this one. Buck fixed blades, I think, are very under-rated. I have a Vangaurd that I would dare to say is one of the finest hunting knives I own!

As for the guy who fought off a bear with a Buck, well I am just happy for him that the bear didn't shove it up his a$$!

I guess that was all he had to protect himself with, and I am very happy things worked out for him.

Ka-bars. Most people seem to want the newer extremely expensive fixed blades, but the Ka-bar is really a great knife for the price. $50 will get you a Black Ka-bar will a Kydex sheath and $90 can get you the Next Generation Ka-bar which I think has been overlooked by many people as too expensive compared to the original ones for the benefits ["if any" is what I often hear after benefits is mentioned]. It's a great knife though, it just feels more comfortable with the new single guards.

Hi Gene,

I heard the story a while ago and from what I remember I belive he did have a rifle with him.

those little $15 "Mora Puukkos" as they were called in that puukko thread. Red handles, plastic sheath, 3.5" blade. They cut like the dickens! James Mattis has them @ www.chaiculery.com

If we are discussing knives we have owned or experienced, I submit the Ontario Quartermaster.
Not expensive, surprisingly strong and well made ..... a versatile "beater". An upgrade from the 440A steel would be great but would alter the "value for money" quotient.
Not a "great knife" just an underrated one.

John's right regarding the guy with the bear. He was dressing his deer when attacked and all he had on him was his Buck knife (not sure which model). He was able to stab the sow 5 times (this was verified in Friday's paper by the taxidermist) until it backed off and he could grab his rifle and shoot it. The guy is 69 years old, too. What a story. All true....it happen right here on Kodiak. He was injured but nothing too serious and he is home in Anchorage as I type this.

PS...I would love the Vanguard in BG42! I wish I got that one when it was available in the masters series.

I was thinking of starting this thread on the way home from the fishin' hole!
My vote is for the schrade sharpfinger. I've cleaned a hundred or so fish with it and it just keeps on going. I just 'steel' it on one of the other blades and keep working. If it only had a kydex sheath....

Greg,

Wow! That is one of those terrific/horrible stories. It is a good thing he didn't drop his knife.

About the Vanguard Master Series, A.G. Russell still has them listed on his sight. I am assuming they are in stock. You can check it out here. They are a bit pricy, but really nice!

I hardly ever hear someone mention a Greco..I don't have one, yet, but no matter the particular blade and handle shape they always catch my eye. Well priced too.

Yeah! Drop the chalupa...
