Most unexpected task recently?

What is the most unexpected task you have used your knife for within the last week?

Mine was my 710. I used it to pop that damn cap off from the bottom of my mouse, which was clogged with s*** to the point it didn't work.
I then proceeded to gently scrape off all of the considerable crud that had accumulated onto the rollers of the mouse. It now works flawlessly. Sure beats having to go out and buy a new mouse.

Does one really need a multi-tool?

I love USING that 710HSSR, like cutting through coffee can "chads" and popping off the lids.

Not really unconventional, but I got to cut up one of those Birthday Cookies at a friends B-Day party. I had to be careful not to cut through the tray it was on, and into the table. My good ol' A.G. Russell Liner Lock was happy to do the work.

Komondor -- I've taken to cleaning my mouse's rollers every month or so to keep it running smoothly. I used to use Q-tips with rubbing alcohol, until I was told that alcohol over time could harm the mouse ball. Dry Q-tips work almost as well. What I've discovered, though, is that ordinary pencil erasers work very well for this cleaning function; they grab a lot more gunk and are readily available.

Recently I used my CRKT M16 to separate a mailing label as I was grappling with an overnight package. The one-hand-opening feature was vital in this instance, as I needed my free hand to keep the tape from sticking to everything else in sight. Just another arduous day at the office. ;)

Pretty boring knife use week for me. (I have been working too much)

One of my dogs is a chow and she is shedding like there is no tomorrow at the moment. Unless you have owned one it is hard to imagine the quantity of hair that they can shed in a day.
Some of the hair was in a knot and I cut it out last night.

Opened a box that a Busfield folder came in with an Apogee as well as the Arclite and that Darrel had up for auction last week.

I was at the grocery store last night and as I was leaving there was a lady at the car next to me and she was trying to get her baby out of the buckle in the grocery cart. She was cussing and freaking out, and the baby was crying too. One of the teeth of the buckle had broken in her attempts, and it wasn't budging. I just snapped open my BF Native and cut the canvas belt. Presto...

And, funny komondor, my little British boy toy friend was over last night, and cleaned my mouse ball in *exactly* the same fashion you just described with his SS Native.

As usual, my sister in- law never learns to take out those premade packages of ice cubes to thaw a bit before their barbecues. Well they were frozen solid altogether. My Spyderco Tim Wegner made for an expedient bludgeon. It' s solid rear spacer cracked thru the entire package with ease. My young niece yawned and ho hummed as usual as this was the umpteenth time that she had witnessed this!

During our recent vacation I lent my three-week old BM 705 (plain blade) to my wife to butcher a mango. The resultant gunk on the blade washed off ok but I got nervous about rust so I put some Breakfree CLP on the blade. Now it looks great but I'm not so sure about eating food cut with it.

Which leads me to the question... "what do you guys put on the blade of your daily knife that will protect the blade but still leave it ok for cutting food"?

I prefer to use a coated blade for cutting food. That way I know it won't rust and I don't put anything on it. I've stopped using Tuff-Cloth on my stainless (154CM, 440V) blades because I like to use them on food. I just wash and dry the blade after use and haven't had any rust problems yet.

I have come to appreciate my folders so much that I reserve the blades on my multi-tools for doing the less desirable and nasty jobs.Yesterday I needed to pry open a stuck cabinet door. Why risk bending the blade on a good folder?I don't mind hammering a multi-tool blade back into shape.Just my opinion of course;)

Yesterday my 140# Rott. lumbered into our home office and
promptly peed on the 12ft. carpet strip between our desks.
My wife screamed for me to get that cpt. "outtahere NOW!".
I pulled my SS Harpy and cut away the damaged portion in one
effortless 3 1/2ft. swipe. My wife had never seen the Harpy
before and asked "is that damn thing legal to have?" ;)

Not sure if unexpected but, things cut last week.Worms, fishline, smallmouth bass, bags of top soil, rags, tomatoes from the garden.Ok I got one freezer burn off of some deer steaks, didn't expect that.(always a rush to eat up last years before you add in this years:D )

I was an attendent in a wedding on the 18th - someone needed a knife at the reception to cut a pan of brownies. There I was in a formal gown, and with all the guys present I was the only one with a knife - a Ken Onion Chive.

I had to perform open heart surgery on a 2nd cousin twice removed and all I had was an old Imperial Electricians knife. Razor try a track ball mouse. I went through 3 mice easily a year then got a trackball and its going on 2 years working fine. Just takes a little getting used to.

Bob - the big drawback to trackball mice is that the opening faces up, so gravity tends to pull the crud in. I used to replace the ones I bought for my company every few months. Maybe they've improved since, but I haven't bought any in 6 or 7 years. An optical mouse works great for me now, no moving parts or rollers to worry about.

My most unexpected task recently was being caught on a ladder without a wirecutter when I was hanging floodlights. My partially serrated Wegner had to do some serious chewing to get through 14 ga. outdoor cable with 4 double insulated copper lines running through it! Only took me about 15 minutes on the Sharpmaker to get everything back to shaving...

I'd say the infrared or optical mice are the way to go :)
You can still poke around with UR blade, but the action[mouse] is smooth as the axis lock...
