Mostly a lurker - need a push

I have been a member for since last June: over a year and you can see how many times that I actually posted. I tend to be a lurker and don't post much. I just need some answers that can help me make some decisions.

In my city I have a legal concealed carry limit of a 3" blade. Do most of you conform to that rediculous rule or does a pocket clip make it exposed and not concealled? The choices that are available in the 3 to 4" selection of blades is much larger. I would be interested in a 3.5" blade, Emerson, Mach 1.

I would really appreciate some feedback. Thanks Clay

I can't really answer your questions, but I do have a couple questions to pose to you... What city in Wisconsin do you live in? and where did you find the blade length limit information? I haven't been able to find sh*t for info on WI knife laws. BTW, I live in Marinette.

I had a link to knife law, but have forgotten it. I know that there is a link to knife laws, but like you I have done searches on the web and found little. Maybe someone has a link that they could share with us. I'm 25 miles from Madison, WI. Totally off of topic but where is the next knife show?

I second Hawaiian's recommendation in confirming with your local DA's office.

In NYC, it's mandatory concealment for legal knife carry. The issue of clips has yet to make it to the courts for a ruling, but the NYPD officers I've spoken to about this say that I would have the benefit of the doubt, in that the exposed clip does not automatically mean that I was carrying a knife.

Edited to add: When in doubt, err on the side of caution. You can always clip the knife to a In-the-pocket sheath for total concealment compliance. Like this one: http://www.magills.com/pgroup_details.php?pgroupid=364

Thanks to everyone for the advice. There was another site that had more detailed descriptions and even had details down to city codes. The simple thing about Wis and no autos is widely known. Thanks again though.

Hi Clay, do you have a link?

Thanks.

No, I can't remember the link. I think that it was something alone the lines of a city code link not really a knife link. Sorry.

I'm from La Crosse and I would like to find out the concealed carry limit. I'm sure I could contact the La Crosse city hall to find out, and ask a police officer or someone there. I bet you could do the same thing at your city. I'm guessing they would answer all your questions pertaining to what is concealed, and what isn't. IF you don't have a city/town hall I suppose you could find a sheriff/police officer and ask him. They generally know the law. I hope you find your answer!

Clay,

If you want a real push to the Mach-1, email me and I'll send you the link to the one I'm selling on eBay. It's a great knife.

Enter, LaCrosse - great Party place to be. Have fond memories of visiting a girlfriend who was attending LaCrosse during some big drunken party called Octoberfest. One impressionable weekend to say the least. Now, 24 years later, I think of Dave's Guitar - the nicest dealer for high end stuff in several states.

Back on topic of legal or not. Yes, the easiest way to go is talk to the local DA - that is who will represent the prosecution when you go before the judge on a WEAPONS VIOLATION. Really in the state of Wisconsin an auto is a misdameanor. Please don't take my word for any of these statements - check out your own facts.

The real reason for not asking a police officer is that there is a ton of gray area in enforcing knife laws. You come across as a clean cut fellow who comes into contact with an experienced officer in a rural area and he is more likely to let a 3 1/2" drop point knife go by with no issues. Now, downtown Madison, with a green as they come officer and the LEO asked to see your "Super Death to All Scum of the Earth" Tactical Model from a company that is called "Kill 'em ALL" will most likely be dealt with much differently. Even officers from the same area might react differently. When you are in this situation, now isn't the time to be a smart mouth.

The DA goes to court and has to get a conviction in your case and will set up what is what and that will override some of the gray bull. Guess what though? If you ask and then do it against advice of the conservative DA - you gonna be in the $hit then my friend. Remember that not knowing it was illegal is no defense either, but if you knew and still choose the wrong path - burn him at the stake is what I think your DA would be saying. Is 3" going to be that much less effective than a 3 1/2" blade? Not so much that the risk is worth the small difference that you might see in that extra 1/2". Rambling thoughts of mine - you make your own mind up. Clay

I have all but abandon the Emerson Mach 1 thoughts. I am leaning more to a 710 or 806D2 or even a 732 Benchmade. Thanks for the thought though. Clay
