Seems like here in Michigan that the weekdays have been gorgeous, and the weekends have been crappy! Because of this, I have been dying to get the kids in the woods, and my plan was to do this on Saturday.

Once again, the weather is against me, with the forecast showing cold, rainy and windy for Saturday : ( Bummer. However, Sunday (mother’s day) looked like it could actually be decent. My wife changed everything around to do all our Mother’s day activities on Saturday so that I could take the older two kids to the woods on Sunday. Is she a keeper or what! : )

So I head out with the kids under the premise of “mushroom hunting” : )

I told the kids to grab a hat, and my girl grabbed her winter hat! I have learned a long time ago to not argue to a girl about her clothing choices : )

Notice her fancy compass ring : )

All of us (I know….jeans and cotton….. : )

Besides seriously trying to spot a morel or two, this is the perfect time to be checking out plants. I immediately noticed a LOT more of this stuff than I had hoped to see.

Then we saw some trillium.

When I pointed it out to the kids, they each had to sniff it : )

I know I should know what this stuff is….but I am having a senior moment!

I never did know what this stuff is, so I can’t claim it on memory loss. I took a picture so that I can try and figure it out.

Just some pics of the hike and the area.

My daughter found a “stick” she had to carry the whole way : )

Had to break for lunch.

That is about it. Thanks for coming along with us : ) In all, I was quite shocked that we walked between 3 and 4 miles. That wasn’t that far for me, but it seems very far for the little legs of my daughter : ) She was getting tired toward the end, and fell asleep in the truck after about 2 minutes. I just think there was enough interesting stuff going on that they didn’t have to think about how long of a walk it was, or how tired they were.

Just a great day out!

Looks like a good time! Nothing better than spending time outdoors with your children. My kids are all grown now, but last week we took our grandaughters out hiking, they had a ball

Looks like you had a great time. Good to see some kids that still enjoy the outdoors. Thanks for sharing

Brian great pics thanks for sharing.Speaking of weather i woke up saturday morning to 4 inches of snow here in the U.P.

Thanks for taking us along. The kids are growing quick, aren't they? I see the little guy still has his mora at his side.

Great pics Brian! I love taking the kids out in the woods. As long as we have food & drink, they're happy to go romping for hours.

Thanks guys for the comments.

I see the little guy still has his mora at his side.

Yup  He trades off between the mora, a bark river, and one that I made him. So, what I am saying is that it looks like we are just born with the sickness, and just never grow out of it :D:D:D

Didn't you know it's unsafe for kids to use or even look at a knife?!?!!

Kidding. :D

Good to see youngsters who like going out, and Sunday was pretty nice up here, unfortunately, our family didn't reschedule the Mother's Day stuff.
Thanks for sharing the photos.

Thanks Brian for taking me along with you on your trip lol. It was great.

Wow your yougsters are getting so big lol.

Take care,

Bryan

Great pictures Brian! The garlic mustard seems to have lost all its garlic flavour now and gone right towards bitter....

That track book is a great way to keep the kids interested in the outdoors. Nothing like the challenge of identifying what has been there to get them going.

Hey Brian,

Glad you got out with the kids.

I'm not sure what this plant is. The only thing that comes to mind is maybe White Lettuce (Prenanthes alba) (AKA Rattlesnake Root).

IMG_0942.jpg

These look like early Wild Lily of the Valley (Maianthemum canadense) (AKA Canada Mayflower)

And in this picture, it looks like you also have some very young Jewelweed (Impatiens sp) and some Virginia Knotweed (Tovara virginiana) (AKA Persicaria virginiana), at least I think so .

Let me know what you think.

Doc

ETA - and your wife? Definitely a keeper! :D
