My wife and 10yr old daughter were accosted last evening in a theatre parking-lot: sad reflection of the times we live in. I appeal to forum members to recommend an easily deployed, unobtrussive edc for a ladys keyring. (if this thread is not appropriate for this forum please advise). many thanks and happy new year to all.

The legality of knife carry depends on where you live. Your profile is blank for location. So, perhaps you can at least fill in the state if not city so that members can make more informed recommendations for you.

I'm sorry about the situation that your wife and daughter were put in. My reccommendation wouldn't be a knife per se. I would consider an aluminum (maybe pointed) kubotan keychain or Comtech Stinger. The point of these is to put the force of a blow into a small area, which can be both painful and incapacitating. As far as a knife, a Spyderco would be good. Not necessarily a keychain item, but you could buy her an FRN Delica (lightweight) and she could carry it in her purse somewhere where it's easy to access. But for the most part, I'm with Gollnick. You really need to play by the rules when it comes to self defense, because defending yourself with an illegal weapon won't have the best results. Have you considered giving her a small bottle of mace, or a flashlight/stungun? There are many self defense objects that are ingenius for women, just make sure it's OK with the law first. Good luck.

i would figure that any knife small or convenient enough to fit on a keychain would make a poor choice for self-defense, or as a visual deterrent. i don't recommend that someone who hasn't been trained attempt to use a knife in this respect anyway. it's probably gonna end up getting snatched and used against them. maybe by "EDC", you weren't referring to a knife at all. if that's the case, i'll shut up now. :D

however, my wife carries pepper spray on her keychain, and it is small, effective, and easily retrieved. she can carry it at her side, held in the ready position as she walks. non-lethal, yet very effective. if an individual DID manage to take it and use it on HER, she'd just be temporarily blinded, but not bleeding.

i'm not sure if pepper spray is legal in your area, but i highly recommend it. you may also direct your wife (and daughter) to take a self-defense or awareness course. it won't make her invincible, but would go a long way toward helping her assess a potentially volatile situation. good luck, and be safe!!!

The chances of anything that is keychain-portable being instantly effective are pretty slim without some focused training. A LaGriffe or some high-concentration pepper spray (Fox Labs- see Vampire Gerbil for more Info) spring to mind immediately. Be wary of the "Quick Fix"/one-stop shopping/solution. Training/mindset is the key.

Actually, the absolute best alternative is a self defense class. This would not only keep her protected, but it would also raise her self confidence and she can walk with her daughter without so much worry, and it's all legal.

GEEZE I added this right after my original post and 2 more came in, one suggesting what I was. Thanks a lot ABE

:D :D :D :p

Hi Burnsy56,

Sorry for your wife and daughter's experience. Like James Keating says, like it or not, there are creatures out there (misquoted). My 2cents.

As mentioned;

#1. mindset, awareness

#2. some specific training. It doesn't have to be a 6 month course. There are many 2 & 3 day courses created by MBC professionals to prepare one for the situation.

#3. a legal non lethal disuader (pepper spray, electronic zapper, etc.)

This part is a sales pitch (apologies).

#4. a Spyderco SPOT as a last ditch defense which was specifically designed and produced for what happened. In America, fortunately, you don't have to be a victim, but you do want to be legal, fair and socially correct should you have to defend yourself.

I have a small key ring fob that can be used as a self defense tool and is innocent looking. It has gone through airports on the key ring for quite some time now. It can be seen at my web site here.

I know that it isn't appropriate to put the knives for sale here but this may be what she may need. If you hold the fob between your thumb and forefinger with the ring around your middle finger, it "can" be used to punch small holes in things. I am sorry if I may have broken the rules on the forums but I didn't know of any other way to let you know about the fob. If this isn't appropriate, please delete it and that will be alright with me.

Everything that's been said so far is good stuff. Mindset and training have to come first. After that you can start looking at "hardware".

If the option is available in your area, I would start by looking into concealed carry. A handgun is not a magical talisman, but it can deliver lethal force at a distance and it does not require high levels of physical ability or training.

With or without a firearm, I would strongly recommend a pepper spray and probably an impact device. It's always good to have non-lethal options.
