Hey Guys, I have heard some folks speak of using Mothers on their leather strop. Is it the one that comes in a white can, screw off lid and the polish is a white cream? Just wat to be sure I hve the right one.

Thanks, David

That would be the one, don't use that knife for food prep though. Yes, I had to say it as some people forget. ;)

I've used Mother's Mag on aluminum, and gotten a mirror polish.

Would it work for a mirror bevel?

The Mag polish will eventually work and produce a mirror finish. The Polish is designed to polish aluminum which is of course much softer than a good knife steel. The knife bevel should be very smooth to start with or you will be at it all day. Comparing the finish it produced with the finish provided by the Spyderco extra fine ceramic rods it appears to be slightly finer than 3 microns. I have no idea what the specific abrasive is but it appears to constitute only a small percentage of the total volume of the polish so you will be at it for a while. Having tried lapping compounds, rouges of various colors and grits, metal polishes etc. because they were available locally, the most satisfactory results was with the Mothers Mag polish.
Unfortunately the more expensive and less easily obtained high quality diamond pastes, spray and chromium oxide slurry work MANY times faster, easier and IMO produce much better and consistent results. One again the experts were right. OldDude1

I've used this stuff for the past couple of years and will not use anything else. It is that good! Sometimes I sit on the couch as I'm watching TV at night, and will polish, clean, and repolish a knife blade as I watch. It definately takes the blade towards that mirror polish if you do it enough.

So do you guys apply it to your strop each time?

Do you notice an improvement in the sharpness of the edge when you use it?

Thanks, David

Some guys let it dry a bit and then use it. I let it dry for about 5 minutes and then strop. Is it sharper with it? I don't have scientific analysis but I think slightly so, but I use it more for the beautiful shine it affords me.

In addition to cleaning up old Buck 110 blades I find on ebay, Mother's puts a shine on a '69 chrome bumper too.
