Lately I have been having problems keeping myself motivated to make knives. probably because every time I start to get serious about making knives something comes up to break my concentration.

You know that zone that you get into where all of your faculties are focused on fitting the blade to lock bar in that folder and things are going just great until the phone rings or the dog decides that she has been ignored long enough and jumps up on your lap with a sloppy ball to throw. At that point it completely breaks your concentration and it is impossible to get back to the job at hand.

This has happened so often lately that I taken to avoiding detailed bench work in favour of something less demanding like grinding or sweeping the floor.

Oh, the must ship knives still get done, but working on new products has taken the hit, that folder project has ground to a halt because of the lack of motivation to get back at it after all the interruptions.

Maybe it will get better this week. I keep saying that to myself, like a mantra.

I think it is a bit of pre birthday blues, don't like to think I am getting older.

The last couple of weeks have been a series of ups and downs but the sense that I can't seem to get anything completed is frustrating. Today I spent half the day fitting a handle on a large bowie until I gave up and started to grind knives to profile for a large Christmas order. Grinding is a little more satisfying than handle fitting because you can see the stack of finished blades growing.

I would have preferred to have the blades waterjet cut (50 pieces) but the delivery time on sheet was two or three weeks while strip was available in 5 days. These have to be delivered in 4 weeks so I have profiled them by hand instead. Two more days to grind bevels, drill holes, and prepolish the blades then they go into heat treating. That leaves me 3 weeks to mirror finish them and fit handles.

Tomorrow I will take another run at the bowie handle, just glue up to do now, then back to finish the blades for heat treat.

Tuesday evening is our Every Other Tuesday Night Coffee Break.....a bunch of local knifemakers, leather workers, collectors and militaria buffs get together at the shot for show and tell and chat. It is an evening out for us with no fixed agenda or rules.
