Motivations for selling a knife?

I know some buy, sell and trade CRK's often. What are your main motivations for selling a knife? Is it usually to raise funds (perhaps for another knife), because you have duplicates, just don't like it? Or, do some just enjoy the process of buying, selling and trading as part of the hobby? No right or wrong answer, just curious.

I've only ever sold one knife and it was because I bought another just like it that I thought was a better example. Then I tried to sell another (CF CRK) that I just didn't care for after receiving. I ended up returning it in exchange for another wood inlayed CRK.

I have sold or traded knives because I didn't really care for the knives as much. And to fund other knives that I have bought or going to buy. Also it is kind of fun to trade with others to try new and different knives. But I have never traded or sold a crk. Not to say I wouldn't though :) I love all the ones I have right now.

The only CRKs I've sold or traded have been mnandis. I've found that I enjoy the hunt. Once I catch one I've been searching for ill keep it a while, love it, perhaps use it then pass it on. They're so beautiful it wouldn't be fair not to share them. I've got photos of all of the ones I've passed on and if I start longing for another like them a new hunt begins. Keeps things exciting.

First off, I agonize (emotionally) over any knife I think of selling, I try to be certain that I won't have seller's remorse, especially if it's a rare one.

I would love to keep them all, but I tend to have endless knife wants yet limited funds for them.

But back to your question about motivations for selling:
1) Just isn't my cup of tea
2) Recouping funds from another purchase
3) Collection going in a different direction

I usually sell mine only to find other things (not just other knives), but my CRK are always the last to be sold. If I can help it I won't sell them and will get rid of anything else first, hinderer, balisongs, whatever I have.
I usually have a few spares or users lying around I like to use but could live without. I love my sebenzas... But to be honest with myself, I doubt I could even go through one sebenza in my lifetime.

Truer words have never been spoken! I've been agonizing all weekend and still no closer to any decision! I have decided to and have sold some less collectable, "bought on a whim" or "really found it was not for me" knives. However, with CRKs ..... have never bought one that I utterly regretted in any way. Some, I obviously like better than others. Still, the decision to let one of those "lesser loved" pieces go is a tough one indeed!!

Dennis if I had your collection, the thought of having to get rid of one would be agonizing for me too. :D

Mostly I sell knives to raise funds to try new knives.

The ones I really like stay around as keepers.

Those are the one I rely on in the woods or on the job site.

Over time, my taste has changed. I have also gotten pickier about the features that I want on my knives. The result of these things is me selling off some knives. Sometimes, I get a knife that I think will fit into my collection perfectly but it doesn't. I will keep it for a little while just to make sure, then sell it. I have regretted selling some knives of course, there was actually an interesting thread about that a couple of weeks back.

Motivation-wise, it's whether I carry it. I'm not much of a collector, so once I had a dozen knives, it began bugging me to have all those knives collecting dust. I'm down to five. I carry my SAK Cadet and one of my Sebenzas every day. The other two are an Emerson Commander and BM710.

My selling choices were often driven with raising funds for something else that I had to have. I've settled down a bit with the buying and selling. I'm happy with what I have. I do want a nice 1911, but not badly enough to sell my Sebbies to pay for it. I can't carry a gun at the office and 1911's suck at opening boxes :) The Sebenza is something I can enjoy having every day.

Yeah I couldn't see myself selling any of my crk's. But a nice 1911 is definitely something that you'd enjoy! Nothing shoots like a nice 1911.

I have many reasons to sell: enjoy the interaction and comraderie associated with buying/selling; my tastes and desires change; raising funds for a different purchase; trading around to try something new; etc.

For me, I purchase Sebenzas when the budget allows. During 2007, I lost a well paying job, and then just a couple weeks later Heather called me that a pair of large annuals (SV30, & Ladder DT Damascus) were ready to ship. Still completed the purchase, my wifes comments re: $1500 knife purchase were priceless. I knew that I could not afford to keep 'em. so after a couple weeks admiring & photographing them, sold them on e-bay.

Had to have them in my hand for a while. Raising funds for a 1911 qualifies as an acceptable trade-off IMHO. Both Sebbies & 1911's are like Lays chips. Once you have had one....

Mostly because there is something about it (usually very minor and irrelevant) that bothers me and I just don't want to think about it anymore.

I've only bought one, and it didn't excite me, so I sold it and bought another knife instead. The large Sebenza is a very nice knife, but I didn't find it prettier than my William Henrys, or more fun than my Southard, or more useful than my workhorse Benchmade 710, and it was pricey enough not to keep around when I could (and did) easily sell it off and buy something else.

If you're a CRK fan, shouldn't you be happy that folks sell them off anyway? That just means that there are more available for you to buy . . . ;)

I guess I have to agree with this statement. It can be a blessing that someone else is tired of a particular knife or needs funds for another. That's what sets the grail free to be cherished by another.
