Hi so im still new to knife making but I’m looking to create my own simple belt grinder. My only problem is I don’t know much about motors and any suggestions on what motor would be the best out of the following photos would b a great help.
I’m looking to make a 1phase motor with a good speed to grind grind knives on. The cheaper the better, I’m not looking for this grinder motor to last more than a year.

Th following photos are from a website called TradeMe which u can buy used items on. Please tell me what one u think would be best. I have voted my top 3. If you could do the same that would be greatly appreciated.

All I know is that you have to have a belt grinder with atleast a 1HP motor and I’ve heard 1400 or 2800rpms are good. If I have anything wrong please tell me.

Wait crap why did none of the photos pop up? How do you get a URL of a photo on your iPad out of your photos?

Jake, you have to upload your photos to a photo hosting site such as https://ibb.co/ which is free and seems to be the easiest around to use. I applaud you at 15 yr old getting started in knife making and making your own tools. Where in the world are you located? USA? Other country? If USA what part?

With your statement of 1400 or 2800 rpm I suspect you're in a part of the world with 50 hz power? For a single speed 1 ph grinder used for general purpose knifemaking you want the slowest rpm and that will still be too fast for many aspects of knifemaking. "IF" at all possible get a 3ph motor and spend the extra $75 USD for a Chinese VFD and put filters over the air inlets to prevent metal dust from getting inside to the electronics.

Thanks ken, I live in New Zealand and with it being so remote it’s hard to get tools over such as anvils let alone belt grinders so we have to make do and get creative. I’ve looked into the VFD but sadly the cheapest we can get them over here is $150NZD and while I want to do that in the future, there is a few tools that I would like before getting a super professional belt grinder. (While the VFD is only 100USD, me just turning 15 means I still havnt got a job)

I suspected your lived in a 50hz country with the rpm speeds you listed. If you wish your photos to appear in the post you'll need to create an acct at ImgBB. Once you have an acct you'll have more options for the embedded codes. Then choose the "BBCode full" option and the photo will appear in your post. Also be sure to use small images, say 150kb or so in size and only 300 to 500 pixels in size. This will keep the photos to a manageable level in the posts.

Have you looked at www.aliexpress.com/, perhaps this link at aliexpress.com? https://goo.gl/zWo8Hk

I do understand about living in remote farm life - that's where I grew up in 1950s here in USA. Mom 'n Dad didn't get phone on the farm until I'd graduated high school.

Good luck and you've came to the right site to learn LOTS.

OK, some basics:
The motor you need will be TEFC - Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled. If the case has vent holes in the front or sides, then it won't work. The end has the cover for the fan blades, but the motor case is sealed.
You want a single phase motor unless you plan on using a 3 Phase motor and a VFD and making it variable speed ( a good option). The VFD converts the single phase to 3 phase and allows varying the speed.

The first/second link is a pump and may not be usable.
The third/fourth link shows a 3 phase 220 volt TEFC motor.
The last two are open frame and won't work.
