Still thinking about the Humiliation thread I was having some breakfast yesterday morning and it was an uncommonly cold 7C in Brisbane. Our house called a 'Queenslander' is a rough term for a dwelling that the carpenters saw fit to put as many gaps into it as possible
which results in the ambient temperature being the same as the bedroom.
Anyway, I was stood up in thin socks on a hard floor after getting up and sitting at the PC for about an hour and I was freezing. The issue of firestarting and keeping warm was on my mind and in particular motor control.
I'm sure many, if not all of us, love to practice in the warmth of an afternoon sun in the garden or garage without fully realising the difficulties that cold adds to the preperation and lighting of the fire.
I am quite proud of my fire making skills, last weeks debacle aside
but the cold component is different, it can really be very disabilitating and my search was for a means to make good and plentiful tinder in an area with a dearth of it.
These are the two top contenders that fine motor control would not be needed for.
1: Very small hand plane. Split a section of wood into 4 Pizza shaped segments and run it along the sharpest/pointiest section for a nice bundle of dry fine wood.
Dimentions 70x33 mm
Or this, but it would necessitate the shaping of wood to a 'somewhat' round state beforehand.
Basically a mega pencil sharpener!
