Motor for Coote Grinder?

Wes,if you can swing it go witha V/S motor set up, check ebay there is always stuff on there,I just bought a 2HP Lesson Ac motor for 49 dollars and a controler for 127 and it is a VFD drive.

Do search here on the forums AC and DC motors and drive and or motor they have been talked about alot..and there is some good info

Also check out www.surpluscenter.com they will set you up with a motor and control for a good price

I am using a 1hp capacitor start motor with the step pulleys that can be ordered with the Coote and I am satisfied with this set up. No problems with bogging it down.

Alrighty. I ended up with a 1HP 1750 RPM GE Farm motor. It's pretty heavy duty, as you can see in this pic.
I had to reinforce the spool since it's made of soft pine. I am also going to be putting a heavier top on it. But this bench set up will make it easier for me to go from station to station and keep the mess in one area, more or less.

Shoot, ya know I never thought of using a spool for a bench. Easy to get around shape, get your legs under it if you need too, or storage, of course. Shoot, you can grind on one side and set up a sit down work area on the other, if you want.

Thanks for the idea

Yeah, they're pretty cool. But the pine is very soft, at least it is on this one. If you look underneath you'll see the 4X4s I used to reinforce the shaft. I will be adding oak laminate to the top. I was looking for another bench, and as you can see from the grafiti on the top of the spool - they were "free". I found 'em sitting outside of a cable company in an industrial area I visit on occasion.

I finally got around to setting up the Cootes on the spool:
Next step is to move all the other power tools to it. I did a test 45* grind on some damascus scrap to see how it worked - that's the chunk of metal to the left of the grinder. Love it.

I like your setup better than mine. Yours allows the coote to lie completely flat. I might need to make some alterations....Ryan

Just a "heads up" but when people start really admiring and wanting to buy your knives get a DC variable-speed grinder.

You'll think you've died and gone to heaven,
and the quality of your work will increase exponetially.
