Anyone have any good links to DC motors such as the one used in ol' Dan's Shoestring Budget set-up? The surplus center link in his thread is dead, but it was sure a good price. :D

Like to keep it nice and cheap for now, the KMG is going to set me back a few pesos.

I just got my surplus center catalog. Its got lots of motors and other useful stuff. Prices are pretty good. Phone is 1-800-488-3407 or www.surpluscenter.com
Don't know if this is the link you were talking about. Havent checked it just took it off the catalog.
Good luck.
Ed
PS: Looking at the DC motors, they seem to have some good deals on motors and controllers. item 10-1783 is a 2 1/2 HP, 95-130 DC motor. Ideal for variable speed applications with speed control (not included). $21.95
They also have controllers listed from 39.95 to 145.00......

I like that price, but it has some serious RPMs going. Does that matter? (I am very electronically ignorant.)

As long as you can do variable speed you'd be okay. The controller will keep full power at lower RPMs. And I think you'd be well served buying the controller from them. I got mine off eBay and it didn't work. If it hadn't been for Roger Linger I'd have blown $80 for nothing. But Roger fixed it for me, after doing a bunch of calling around for an obscure part. He's kind of a hero around here. :)

I got my motor from American Science and Surplus. Don't know whether they still have them, haven't looked. But their catalog is a blast! Jeanie and I fight over it when it comes in the mail; I lose. They have all kinds of cool stuff.

I got mine from the same place as Dave. (I looked and they don't have anything right now.) I don't know about those high RPM jobs. This one looks real nice http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2005020511424801&item=10-1906&catname=electric for 80 bucks.

I always thought this on http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2005020511424801&item=10-1783-A&catname=electric would be neat to try for $20. Has builtin brackets. However, the shaft isn't keyed. So, I don't know how you'd mount a pulley.

Then I called a local electric motor place and ordered a controller curcuit board, heat sink, and resistor from them. I wired it in my own ugly box.

In these systems (treadmill motor deals) you want a good controller and view the motor as expendable.

Also if your motors are all similar you can get by with one controller for you're whole shop. Setup a plug system and plug the tool you're using at the moment.
