Motor pulley for sanding belt on grinder

Wanting to build a knife grinder. One motor I already have has a flat belt pulley on it. I assume this will be ok for a belt sander I just want to double check here.

i got a really nice $700 VFD at a auction that came with a parts grinder for $20! hoping it will handle the single phase motor. Have not looked up the specs yet, if not, than I am sure I can find another 3 phase motor for nothing.

so I found a couple sites that sell the other parts for a knife grinder. So hopefully I can get this all done next year, and get my blacksmith shop up and running.

I will try and get a picture of the pulley

I seriously doubt the VFD will work with a single phase motor. While there are VFDs that will work with a 1 ph motor, they are not very common. The VFD manuf 'n model will give you that info, and "IF" it will work on 220 VAC 1 ph or if it requires a 3 ph input. Without the VFD manuf 'n model there's no way we can make any suggestions on that.

If the pulley on the motor is 3" or more in diameter and at least 2" or more wide it will work. Depending on RPM of motor will tell you what diameter is best. Either the tracking wheel or motor drive wheel needs to be crowned to help belt run straight. You can get a crowned tracking wheel if the motor pulley is flat. Usually it's better for both not to be crowned so they're not fighting each other in keeping the belt straight.

Good luck and have fun building.

Ive seens parts combos sanders sell cheap, hoping to pick one of those up for the crowned portion. I actually know where one is.
