Motor speed on a Burr King 562

I just picked up a used Burr King 562 1" grinder today. I'm new to this hobby and pretty excited to get started.
This Burr King was quite inexpensive but it came with a 1/2hp 3400rpm Dayton motor. I have a 1hp 1725rpm Dayton motor that I salvaged a few years ago. My question is should I swap the 1/2 for the 1hp right away? I'm waiting for my blade stock to come in the mail so I dont have any steel to test the grinder with. I also dont have belts yet. I dont know what the best speed is for a fixed speed grinder that will be grinding hard steel. Any thoughts and suggestions will be appreciated.

Well, a 1" Burr King. I didn't realize they made those critters. It has to be a quality machine, in any case.
I would change the motor now. if it's an easy change. You will use the power without doubt even with a 1" belt
You probably can get belts from Tru Grit. I have always found them to be good people who give good service.
As for the speed of your machine I wouldn't get too concerned. The only time I grind with a fast speed is to contour grind otherwise I go slow or slower. Frank

Here's a picture. I'm going to order some belts today. I'll also take your advice Frank and swap out the motor while I'm waiting. I also got a 9" disc sander mounted to a stand thrown in for no extra money. It was a good day :-)

Its a 42" belt BTW. I wish it were longer and wider but its better than what I had, which was nothing!

I just looked at the photo and realize the motor is mounted behind and uses a belt to drive the grinder

I would consider putting a pair of multi-step pulleys on it with the low speed motor

a 3 speed would take the motor to 1/4 1/2 and 1 of the original 3400 rpm motor

Maybe yu have to extend the drive shaft to do that ?
Maybe it's easy to do , maybe not.

Thats a good idea. I'm also going to look around for a used variable speed motor on craigslist or somewhere. Although it sounds like running the 1725rpm 1 horse with the stock pulley might do the trick.
