I'm a new knifemaker in the process of building a belt grinder. I was wondering if, given the same horsepower, there would be a differance in using a 3450rpm vs a 1725rpm motor. I would use a belt and pulleys to gear for the same belt speed. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hobbit, use the higher rpm motor with a pair of step pulleys so you'll end up with a variable speed grinder. Much better than single speed. Took me three years to find that out. lol! Take care~! Michael

Thanks for the quick reply. I was planning to use step pulleys to vary the speed (and 1725rpm would be more convenient) but I was wondering if there were any other considerations eg. runs cooler, more/less torque, longer life?
