Motor Speeds

I was recently given a SEARS 6" grinder. And the motor runs at 3450rpm. I would like to put a 6" or 8" contact wheel on one side and maybe a buff on the other. Is there a inexpensive way I can cut the speed in half?

Thanks,
Garrett

The 3450 rpm is the ideal speed for buffing metals like stainless steel, in fact the faster the better. The minimum recomended surface feet per minute for stainless steel is 6000 SFM. To calculate the SFM use the following formula

(Buff diameter in feet X Pi) X RPM = SFM

In the metal polishing trade I often go as high as 10000 SFM on stainless steel because the higher speeds bring out the luster of the metal better. If I have to adjust SFM I usually switch to smaller buffs rather than play with motor speed or shaft speed.

I will dig out a referance table for you over the weekend and post it.

I own a large metal polishing shop doing aluminum , brass, and stainless and of course KNIVES.
