Hi This is my first post in the shop talk forum...I have decided it was time to take the plunge into knife making and have just about made my mind up on getting a Coote grinder with 8" contact wheel. I most likely will buy a 1 1/2 hp variable speed motor but if I decide to go with a single speed set up what rpm motor should I look for? Where can I get the best deal on a variable set up? Thanks much for your help......Richie

Just got a coote's for xmas. I am using step pulleys to vary the speed. A bit cheaper than a DC variable speed motor.

I think the motor that came on my Wilton runs at 1750 rpm. Since I converted to variable speed, I realize that is way too fast. Even when I'm rough grinding I seldom go past 50% now. If theres anyway you can afford it, go variable speed, it gives you so much more control and you can finish a blade alot finer with the slower speeds.

Take care!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Richie,
Use a motor with 1750 rpm.You can get variable speed DC motors and controllers from Grainger's.The cost will be around $500.00,depending upon hp and features.Dave

great choice on the coote. get a 1750 rpm and cut the speed in half with step pulleys. norman coote will will help you with how to get the belt speeds you want.
