I got my motor for my disk grinder. It's a 1.4 hp AC motor, 15.9/3.4 amps, 1 phase, 115 v. Reversable and 2 speeds 1725 and 3450. Now, on to the ques.

1. Because of the 15.9 amp startup, will I have problems running this on a 15 amp breaker or do I need a 20?

2. I'd like to wire switches to change the speed and direction. I remembered these posts and hunted them down.

Will this reverse switch work? The motor has 5 poles. The 15.9 amps was worrying me again, switch listed is for 10 amps.

Wiring Diag.

Black------O 1
...............O 2------Low Speed
...............O 3----Line (Black wire???)
...............O 4------High Speed
Red-------O 5

3. Does pole 3 (Line) take the Black or White wire? And what gauge? 10 ga?

4. For wiring the speed switch, I figured the same switch but not sure how to wire it.

Any help would be payed in full by my ex-wife. :) She's just a pain in my ass.

Thanks guys

Thanks Allen. That helps with the switches. What about the amp rating for the DTDP switches? Are the starting amps to much?

Thanks again

AFAIK, the amp won't be a problem as long as your switch and your fuses exceed the rating (the motor will just run slightly underpower). You are putting in a fuse, right? ;)

Did you get the switch figured out?

Got the switches figured out. 2 DPDT 20 amps@125v.

The rotation switch will be crosswired between posts 1 and 5 to switch direction with the center pos off. Wiring should be post 1 to left center, post 5 to right center. Left 1 crosswired to Right 2 to motor lead. Right 1 crosswired to Left 2 to wire lead.

The speed switch will be wired with the black coming in at left center and black going to post 3 from left 1 and left 2. White coming in at right center and the white's going to post 2 from right 1 and post 4 from right 2. (see diagram in previous post :) )

I'm using 12-3 wire and a pvc junction box to build everything in. If you guys want I can take pics, but I don't think I can post them since I don't subscribe. Might write up a tutorial for whoever comes along after me :) and let one of you post it.

Nope, I havn't bought a fuse or holder yet, hell, didn't even think about it, where should it go? In black wire before it gets to the first switch? Any suggestions will be quickly taken to heart.

Thanks again

Bryan
