Hope this is in the right place.

I'm in the process of building the NWG grinder and since they were out of 3-step pulley's, I ordered a set of 4-steps from amazon for pretty cheap. Well they arrived and are 2.5" wide!

I haven't picked a motor out yet and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for one that could possible fit these.

I was looking at this one:
http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/m...oted-115-230v-1ph-15hp-3600rpm-motor-tp-reset

But they won't get back to me on the shaft length. I'm planning on a 1.5HP 1PH motor and want to keep it as reasonable as possible (I've scavenged all around my town and can't find any used ones).

Also - can someone explain to me the difference between the 3600 and 1800 rpm models and why 1800 rpm models are always more expensive? Seems counterintuitive to me.

Any help is greatly appreciated! I'm actually going to be using this to make straight razors, but may delve into some knife making as that would make some nice gifts for my family for xmas.

I guess worse case scenario is that I return the 4-step pulleys and hunt some 3-step ones down as those surely should fit.

Well oddly enough, I've been looking into cheap motors myself for a 2x72 build.

I searched around for the manufacturer spec sheet and came across this for their 56-C motors http://www.toolmex.com/new/documents/motors/BROCHURE_56C.pdf

Shaft length is 1-7/8"

Hope that helps!

Thanks for leading me onto these motors... there is a canadian global industrial, and I haven't found cheaper brand new TEFC motors anywhere else so far

Thanks Jonathan. Looks like I won't be going that route. Or, does anyone know how wide a 3-step pulley is? I'm assuming around 1.75-2" or so.

Joe

You don't necessarily have to have full shaft inside the pulley.

Most shafts will be that long in that motor frame size, NEMA standardized.

As long as it sits on and the setscrew will engage the key -1/2" overhang? good enough.

You do have to watch, the cheapest aluminum pulleys are quite hollow in the large base end preventing you from getting the full depth.
Stick to the expensive maska pulleys - there is a reason KMG and KnifemakerUSA are selling those.

What kind of price are you looking at?

Do you have 220V available?

If your answer fits in these parameters check this one out:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ELECTRIC-MOTOR-...155?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f0b10775b

If I am not mistaken this is the same motor that the KMG sells. The RPM is slightly higher than mine, mine is in the 1750 range, but other that it is the same as mine.

I have never regretted going with the 2hp. I never have to worry about bogging it down and with the maska 3 step pullies I have the same setup as the kmg without a vari-speed controller!

If that is not what you want you can often find motors for a decent price on ebay, just watch the shipping cost.

2HP and 220V is something you will not regret!

220V is not available and I rent so I can't really have one put in. I worry about 2 HP as my garage is only on a 20 amp circuit.

So I returned the 4 step pulley's as they were cheap aluminum hollow ones. I wish USA knifemakers had some in stock. The beaumont ones are a bit more than I was hoping (2x the cost of usaknifemakers). Anyone know of other sources for high quality step pulley's?

1800 rpm motors generate twice the tourque of a 3600rpm motor of the same HP. They need to be better built. I used a pulley from Rob for a number of years. A nice pulley is worth the extra $.

Hey, I missed that.

Yes if you are using a NWG with stepped pulleys, you want a 1750 rpm motor, the pulleys double the speed on high speed.

Thanks a ton! I kept wondering about this.

For as much as I already have invested in this, I guess beaumont ones might be the way to go. Basically $90 for the pair vs $50 for other ones that might not be as good of quality. I shouldn't be stingy at this point.

Maska is a good one

You can buy them several places.

2-3-4, 5/8" shaft - yes they are expensive, but I consider the $35 a decent price they are double that here.

Thanks a bunch for the link.

I think I'm going to go with the 1.5 HP motor from that seller that the person above linked to their eBay page. Thanks a bunch for the help guys!

I had a look at that ebay link.
Be aware, it is red like a Leeson, but I see nothing in the auction listing about what motor brand it is.
That means to me it is a Chinese motor

These are Chinese and about $50 less
