Hey guys, I'm moving to Flushing and want to get a bike. Eventually, I may want to get something big, but to start I was thinking of a Japanese bike in the 650-750cc range. Any advice about the bike or a reliable place in the area to pick one up? Thanks.

Yitz,Yitz,Yitz,
I know you have great taste in knives. Don't put a rice rocket between your legs. There's a HD dealer right off Northern Blvd. They make a series of bikes now called Buell in the style and sizes you are looking for.
Don't you know those Japanese bikes are trafe?

How tall are you and how heavy are you? If it were your first bike I would look for a 600cc. I know a 600 is on the "small" side, but it's still a lot of bike. Also 600's are cheaper (buying and insurance). The difference between a 600 and a 750 or 900 will just be noticed between bikes. In other words, any 600 will blow away 99% of all cars on the road. Also the "smaller" bikes handle better. I own a 94 FZR 1000 (was looking for a 600, but found it cheap...) and a friend has a 97 CBR 600. His 600 can be turned SO much quicker than my 1000. Being that I NEVER use the full power of my bike (no 5 mile straight roads w/o traffic) I can go faster on the CBR. The only reason you might want a larger bike, would be if you were really tall. Also, buy "a twist of the wrist 2". It's mandatory reading for any rider. If you have any questions feel free to email me. Can’t help on where to buy a bike, being that I'm from CT.

In the 600 range take a look at the Honda CBR-600 and the Kawasaki ZX-6R...I sold my CBR-900R the end of last summer and it was one hell of a fast bike.

Thanks for the replies guys! I think Hillside Honda is no longer around, and would appreciate any other ideas. I ordered the book recommended above. I'm 6'2" and guess I have to balance seating comfort with ease of handling. I may post this on the general community forum to see if it reaches a wider audience and generates more responses. Thanks again for your suggestions.

I'd also love to recommend Harley but I know they are not to everyone's liking.

Check out Crossbay Honda. Nice selection.Big place and financing. Go straight down woodhaven blvd toward rockaway beach. Ya cant miss it,
Alex

Who long ago realized its uncomfortable to sit on your nuts. No race ready bikes for me!!

Hello all. I was just looking around the forums and found this thread. I am one step ahead of you yitz. I just got my fist bike last Sunday. I am quite a bit shorter than you, only 5'6". I got a 1986 Yamaha Fazer 700, but I think that you are a little to tall for one. It had been siting for two years in a garage so it don't run too well at the moment. Needs the carbs cleaned and calibrated.

Good luck, and if you want a new sport bike, go with a CBR 600 F4I. Very fast bike from what I hear. If thats to small, then the 929RR should do it! I have ridden off road for a good while, so I do know one thing: Get a bike that fits your body size. You don't want to be cramped up on a bike thats to small, or stretching for the ground (at 6'2", I don't think you have to worry about that!

) Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

All the 600s are great but the Suz and Yam (R7) will prolly be a bit hard on yer wrists. If the ergonomics of the Honda don't suit you then mebbe you might want to look at a 900 twin...I've got a TRX 850 and am the same height as you.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll follow up on some of the leads. Anyone have any other ideas, please let me know.

For a frst bike I would suggest nothing bigger than a 500. To call a 750 a 'little bike' is problematic: my old 750 Suzuki would go an honest 140mph (@7000' altitude). I don't think its a good idea to learn to ride in a city on something that's as fast as a modern 600-750.

I learned on a 750 ('70 Norton Commando, bought new), and was lucky to only crash hard three times, with no real injuries.

Anyway, 500 singles are perfect city bikes.

Good luck...

If you're still in Brooklyn, check out King Cycles. I live near there. They are a good shop. If you want to check one out in Queens, Crossbay Honda is probably your best bet. Take the MSF course(I have to take the course too) run by Trama Auto School.

If you're 6'2", you might be cramped on the 600cc and 750cc bikes. My brother had a CBR600F2 that I found very small for my long legs(I'm 6'3"). I'm planning on getting either the 2001 Yamaha FZ-1 or a 1999 Honda CBR1100XX(still deciding which I like best).

Oh yeah, Keith Code's Twist of the Wrist book/video is a good purchase.

Thanks for all the help, guys. I've already gotten Twist2 and am following up on some of the other suggestions. It's a little scary to keep hearing about the inevitability of crashing, but it's a dream I've had all my life and I'm determined to give it a shot.
