I live a short trip from there on the PA side and someone mentioned you can no longer get up to sunfish pond because of forest fires. Did you see any evidence of this?

None whatsoever. Actually, before I hiked it to the top of Kittatiny I did some 3 miles on the AT towards sunfish pond. I didn't see any evidence of forest fires or any signs supporting your story.

Thats good. I was sad to hear rumour that they had it blocked off and feared the damage that may have occurred but that was from a non-backpacking coworker. I've been doing my shorter AT hikes on the PA side lately. Its a little more technical right at the gap before the Mt flattens out for a stretch but the PA packing rules are significantly more flexible since I'm not a huge fan of camping in the established sites.
