I'm very partial to the Moutan House brand of freeze dried foods, in which you just add hot water. They taste much better than MRE's but at $5 per pouch, it's just too much money to buy for 6 months supply.

Does anyone know where to get this cheap or an equivalent alternative freeze dried food?

Check out this site. It isn't exactly Mountain House, but it looks like it could be reasonable. This is another thing I want to try this month.

I'm sure if you assembled the ingredients in a safe and proper manner, you could probably seal them into a 5 gallon bucket. Maybe?

That can be done but I've seen it more with whole foods like bulk beans , hard wheat and rice.
The trick is to pour in your goodies and place a little chunk of dry ice on top of it , put the lid on but not sealed to allow breathing , let the dry ice shrink up and then seal the lid , always use new buckets and lids too.
If I am wrong about this method someone feel free to chime in , please.

I did some searching and all prices I found were about the same on various foods.
Personally I just go with MRE's , you can find them reasonably priced on eBay and you cannot go wrong with them as far as flavor and quality and longevity.

In that little box there are 14 complete meals (entree , rice and apples in sauce)

Here is the Beef Stew entree , with some of Lousiana's finest :D
Even without sauce or pepper , itis very edible and tasty.
