Does anyone have a source for the details of the incident on Vancouver Island where a man armed with a pocket knife survived a mountain lion attack ? I remember that his survival was due in part to the fact that his blood coagulated far faster than typical blood .

Never saw that one. However, if your pocket knife is a vaquero grande you stand a much better chance. Ie...near de-capitation:eek:

Great story! Exerpt to follow:

"...Because of a sudden downpour, he took shelter from the rain under a rock ledge hanging over the remote gravel road. As he leaned against the rock shelf outcropping, the cougar pounced down beside him, startling him. When he went for his pocket knife, he left his neck exposed and the cougar lunged. He had to throw his head in a way to protect his neck, *which is when it bit his scalp and pulled it down over his eyes. In the struggle, Parker was hurled into the ditch, where his jaw was shattered against a rock and his cheekbone broken.

As the cat clawed and bit into his neck, face, and head, Parker managed to open his knife's three-inch blade, stab the cougar a few times, and eventually slit it's throat, leaving the cat to bleed in the middle of the gravel road. (looks like an Uncle Henry to me from the picture)

...Port Alice residents have long been aware of the dangers of cougars and have been warned by officials to walk in groups or carry bats, knives, or pepper spray to protect themselves from aggressive cats. Thursday's attack was the fourth in about two years for the north Island and the second for Port Alice. (emphasis)

Interesting to think that keeping his knife as sharp as possible may have saved Mr. Parker's life in this situation.

I once read about an attack in Readers Digest about a guy mauled by a mountain lion, but it soulds like a different story. (could be the same one?) In the Readers Digest story the guy used a SAK and it closed on his hand and cut him up pretty bad. I thought it intresting that in the photo with the article you could make out the distinct shape of a large Cold Steel Voyager clipped to his pocket. Live and learn. Mac

This story is an advertisement for locking one-handed folders, if not for fixed blades, if ever I've seen one.

The page on which this story appears has many accounts of mountain lion attacks. It wasn't too long ago that this message board was pointing out wolf pack attacks.

Y'all trying to make me nervous or something?

And here the worst thing I ever worried about when venturing into the woods was getting lost or breaking my leg or something. Now I've got to worry about Cougars, wolves, feral dogs, Big Foot....

I'd better go drink more beer...

The RD article was about a guy hiking in a State Park in Colorado, Golden Gate, I think. Different one.

Bulgron,
once you've consumed enough beer drop me a line and I'll give you a great deal on my patented cougar, wolf, bear, dog and bigfoot repellant and throw in the anti skunk ape and panther spray. Let's say about $300 even. Cheers.

Lindey,

Thank you for your kind offer, which looks like an absolutely OUTSTANDING deal, but I'm going to hold out for the product upgrade when I can also be protected against alligators, E.T., leprechauns, were-wolves, killer rabbits from Caerbannog, genetically-altered swamp beasts, giant anacondas, murderous bee swarms, rampaging mutated spiders, sociopathic flocks of birds, prehistoric subterranean-dwelling man-eating worm things, and deliverance-style wilderness goons.

Since I believe it will be a while before that spray is available, I'm guessing that's more time for me to drink beer!

You forgot Zombies. :D

Those are some terrifying stories , check out this comment ......

When she began to scream, the others rushed to her assistance. "They heard her scream, 'Get it off me. Get it off me,'" said Brian Naslund, acting lieutenant for Kern County with the DFG. Maciejewski used a knife to stab the mountain lion twice in the shoulder, but it had little effect, Naslund said

Does'nt it make life more enjoyable knowing we are not top of the food chain ?

Rest assured, we are still on top of the food chain, and will remain there until such a time as we lose our ability to make weapons -- or until Bigfoot unleashes his secret alien deathray, thus enslaving us all. :)

That story you quoted didn't say what sort of knife was used or where exactly in the shoulder the cougar was hit. I'm admittedly not up on feline physiology, but from handling my house cat it seems that that you could hit it in the shoulder and hit only bone. Also, my understanding is that cats have fewer pain receptors than do human beings, so they can withstand scratches and cuts a lot easier than we can.

So, yeah, I can see how a hungry cougar might not be discouraged by a few pokes from that 2.5" folder in your pocket. OTOH, hit it with a BK-1 or a machete or the like, and I do believe it will react.

About the only chance I'd imagine you'd really have against a cougar would be maybe with a well made pike or spear in one hand with a good fixed blade in the other for when it gets past the spear.

In any case, I don't think I'd want to find out if I'm right.

I don't think anyone would pick a smallish knife as their number 1 choice for a weapon going up against a mountain lion. I know I wouldn't.

But as shown in these reports, it can be a heck of a lot better than your bare fist!

Big props to the old dude who took out the cougar with his folder!

I remember reading a book many years ago called "Tigrero!" Supposedly a true life story about a guy down in Brazil who made a hobby of going out into the jungle and hunting jaguars with a metal-bladed spear (and probably a good knife). He was pretty successful at it and became a legend, don't recall what finally happened to him. Just an anecdote, maybe Pict knows the story.
