I'm looking to purchase a 1 blade lock back. I did a search here and have come up with several options. I like the Queen S&M File and Wire tested, but.... I am on a budget. I would like to spend around $50.00. I want a carbon blade, scales can be derlin, wood, or whatever. I'm more concerned about the blade itself. Any suggestions. Also, does anyone know what steel is used in this knife http://www.thebladeshop.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=3499

Thanks,

you can get a case copperlock or a queen mountain man in cocobolo for about 50 bucks, there a a few more options, I'm sure.

edited to add 1095, from camillus:

If carbon steel is a must, the Queen 1095 and D2 knives are just about your only choice.

Schatt & Morgan (Queen) File and Wire are ATS-34 and Camillus uses 420HC stainless for their version.

I can't think of another source for this pattern in carbon steel, anyone else???

Queen Mtn Man Lockbacks with bone handles and 1095 blade steel.

Good Luck!

I knew if I posted on this forum, you all would come up with somthing. I don't mind spending $19.00 more that what I posted. Thanks. Does anyone own one of these knives? If so.... how do you like them? Thanks for your responses!!!!!!:D

Edited to add.... I think I'm going to order the "Root Beer" handled knife. If anyone has this knife....even in different scales.... let me know how you like it please. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the Schatt File and Wire and the 1095 with Sambar Stag. Very nice knives, with excellent fit and finish. The only thing you should know about these is that there's a tendency to a little front/rear blade play. It's nothing major, and you might get lucky and get one with no play. Even the fans of these knives will admit this minor issue. It doesn't affect performance so far as I know, but it's noticable.

If you buy from Bill Horn at Cumberland Knifeworks, and let him know you'd like one with little or no play, he'll pick one out special for you. He's one of the best and most reputable dealers on the internet in my opinion.

Glad to help you find what you were looking for! I hope you are very happy with the knife!

It's $4 over your limit but, that's like, one coffee at Starbucks! It's the best deal on the Mountain Man and IMO, the nicest user.

I gave one of these as a gift and it was very well received. I already have the Red Stag version otherwise I'd have bought one for myself. The cocobolo handle feels warm regardless of what the temperature is.

Speaking of Bill Horn, IMO, there's not other dealer to buy a slipjoint from. He's always hand picked my knives looking for the details that are most important to me. Easily the best internet source for knives!

What collector recommended is what I would go with, as long as you are wanting a larger knife.

That is exactly what I have, and am happy with it.

Terry is right, the Mountain Man is a big knife. It's about the size of a 110 but slimmer and lighter weight.

I have a pouch for mine but I usually carry it in my rear pant pocket. It has a lanyard of which the knot hangs out just enought to make it easy to get too.

Even though it's fairly large, the style is traditional and doesn't evoke fear like a tactical knife might. It's an attractive knife.

I hate to get all nostalgic, but have you thought about looking for a Schrade Uncle Henry 5UH? on ebay..........these can be found still, mint, for around $25-30, if you do not want a box.

It is a really pretty little knife. locks up very well and the Delrin scales are great, not too fat, fit in the hand well. Also, of course, the steel is excellent, takes a very good edge.

Just a suggestion.

Those are made in the Olbertz factory and you can get the same knife under the Weidmannshiel brand for $30 - $35 on ebay.

Looks like a great work knife. I've been considering one for quite a while. Might come in handy if I ever lose my other 653 work knives. :D
