Mountaineer 1 vs Shadow III for general outdoor use?

I am thinking of picking up one of the one piece hollow handled Reeves while I still can and was debating between the two. I would use it for general carry when hiking, camping and working around the yard, so I was looking at the Mountaineer 1 and Shadow III.

Was just wondering whether anyone had comments on the spearpoint vs clip point of the two knives. I know the Mountaineer also has a single guard as opposed to the Shadow with the double guard. Ideally I think I would like a spear point with a single guard but that does not seem available. I did read there was some Shadow III made with single guards but I do not know if there are available anywhere.

Thanks for any input.

The Mtnr 1 is a great knife and one of my most used small fixed blades. IMO its probably an ideal back packing knife, having the hollow handle for a bit of fire lighting kit or what ever and a nice blade shape thats good for a fair range of tasks. The single guard is one thing I do like about that knife making it a bit more comfortable if you want your thumb or index finger along the back of the blade. It is quite small though but is big enough to still be handy, when your out on the trail its a knife you can carry really easily and discreetly so thats another good thing about the size. The sheath is also a nice one but I quite often use an after market kydex sheath as well.

This is the exact reason I was interested in either of these knives. I want something discreet and easy to carry that will handle most tasks.

Hello There ! I have 16 one piece knives, I consider them the best survival hollow handle knives ever made and what first brought me to CRK. First, if you want a single guard shadow III, New Graham knives has them, its on page 5, thats the only place I hve ever seen them. The shadow III was my first CRK many years ago. I figured it was the least expensive to see how I would like a one piece knife. After getting this one, I fell in love with them and have bought them ever since. I definately prefer the spearpoint. Most of mine are of the spearpoint in different styles. I carry my shadow III every year all through hunting season and use it for everything. I also like the pancake sheath of the double guard shadow III, you hardly know its there and it does not flop around. The point it very tough and I have not had any problems in any way with it. To me, a good spearpoint will always be tougher than a clip point style. I have a mountaineer II and just prefer a shadow IV to it. I know I would always prefer a shadow III over a mountaineer I ( I dont have a mountaineer I because I dont really care for the blade style ) I can see where the mountaineer I would be better, cleaning fish, game, where you want a sharper point, but for me, if you want a more durable point, go with the shadow III. I thought about getting the single guard from new graham knives in the past, but with it having a different sheath ( like the mountaineer I ), I ended up getting a second shadow III double guard with the pancake sheath instead. I have a tanto III which I would probably prefer over a mountaineer I also, its a single guard as well. For my money, you can not go wrong with either, ALL CRK are awsome, but from someone that has extensively used them, go with the shadow III, single or double guard and never look back !!!

Thanks so much nyefmaker for all the info. Since I always carry a folder with me I think I may try and get the spearpoint style. The folder can take care of the finer cutting, or a necker that I carry that is almost like a bird and trout style.

I wanted to get a tough small fixed blade, and the spearpoint seems better suited to that. Looks like I hesitated to much on the one from new graham, but may have located another so we will see. I guess my gun dealer is correct in saying "You should have bought it when you saw it".

I have a Mountaineer 1. Love it!

Ditto what Haze said.

Well I was lucky enough to find another Shadow III with single guard at a different dealer and did not hesitate on that one. So I'll have to get some pictures up when it arrives :D.

I am glad I was able to find another as it really is the combination I am looking for: spear point and single guard.

I am glad you were able to obtain one. Both of mine are double guard and they are awsome little kinves. I use one and bought the second one at a price I could not pass up. The single guard will be a little different, but just as tough and usable. Single guard & double guard just comes down to preference. You made a great choice. Let me know what you think of it when you get it !!!

Single guard is definately my preference since most of the time I hold a knife I like to put my thumb were the top guard would be. It will also be familar to my P Sebenza that I will probably carry when carrying the Shadow.
