Mountaineer I and Shadow III Question/Comparison

I love the Shadow III. It's got to be the strongest knife of its size that I have ever owned. I actually just purchased a second one from True North Knives yesterday. I find the Shadow III to be ideal for EDC due to it's size to strength ratio making it quite "abusable" for such a small knife. I am constantly amazed that I've pried open nailed crates and chopped down small trees effectively with a knife small enough to fit in my pocket!

My problem with the Shadow III is this: I find that it is not so effective when camping because there are two very common (for me anyway) camp chores for which is does not perform real well. These two chores are whittling and food prep.

My question here is whether or not the grind on the Mountaineer I is *signifigantly* higher than on the Shadow III (hard to tell in the pics) and if the higher grind makes the Mountaineer I *signifigantly* more well suited for whittling and food prep?

Thanks!

[Edit]

Neail at True North Knives has some excellent pictures of both knives which make it much easier to see the differences in the grind height on each. I hope he doesn't mind me linking to his pics.

Another question: Is the lower grind on the Shadow III (which I notice Mr Reeve also puts on the Aviator) what gives that knife it's added strength? Is added strength the reason for the lower grind on the Shadow III and Aviator?

Thanks again!

Sorry I don't have too much time at the moment, but:

Shadow III is for me typical ECD with slight tactical flare. It's very tough to it's size, cuts well, but wor whittling/slicing it's not primary choice. It's stout little SoB for ever situation.

Mountainer I is great cutter and clicer. Also needle-like tip can penetrate soft object like a lightsaber. Ideal small CRK for food preparation, camp work and general outdoor cutting actions. Great alternative to big folder! All that thanks to MUCH higher grind than on Shadow III. Also sheath is more "attache anywhere" friendly due to snap-lock. Great for on-backpack carry.

Small comparison (notice the grind-line and carry option):

Thanks PiterM! That's a pretty thorough answer. Makes me wonder what else you would have said if you weren't in a hurry.

 :D I'm glad I could help anyway!

Senate, it's Proteus Versipack made by Maxpedition (www.maxpedition.com). Great stuff, very heavy-duty... bomb proof simply. And I'm lucky to have pleanty of that gear as an authorised dealer for Poland :D

Bring me on of those Versipacks to Blade Peter :)

On the Mountaineer I, I prefer it over the Shadow or an Aviator for food prep, whittling and small chores because of the high grind and the TIP shape, I don't think it's tip would be as strong as on the Shadow III for piercing or tactical use but I still think it would be very strong non the less. The MTI is great cutter though for all the chores I would use for. It was the one I picked after handling all the others and comparing them.

The Mountainier is my favorite CRK in this size. I like the high grind very much. It´s great for food preparation and carving.

I have used mine for food prep with great results. I want to test it out on field dressing though. :)
