a couple of months ago i purchased a mountaineer II. after having a chance to use it awhile i just keep liking more and more. to me it seems like the perfect size for a hiking/camp knife and is not so big that you can't field dress small or big game with it. it has a fairly thin blade that slices well for preparing food, but has enough spine behind it that you can use it for heavier task. the workmanship, the fit and finish, the grind lines, a high quality sheath, everything about this knife is exellent. and at the price these sell for i feel like it is a bargain. one feature i like about the mountaineer vs some of CR's other same size blades is the half guard. this allows you to choke up on the blade and use the knife for finer task. i am looking for to adding more CR's to my collection, especially a sebee.

I don't own many fixed blades, but I do have a Mountaineer II. It's excellent.

Yes I like the mountainneer 2, it has classic blade style with excellent balance of strength in spine and tip, and fine ground edge with hollow grind blade. I think the "middle sized " CRKs are excellent all-round knife for everything short of chopping, this blade style is best i think for mid size proportions. Probably my favorite camping knife.

Just noticed something. I was using the knife to split some kindling. I knew the knife wouldn't be a chopper and didn't expect it to be,but just wanted to try it. After just a couple swings, the knurling on the handle became painful. Not faulting the knife, I still like it real well, just something to be aware of. I might try putting a bicycle inner tube over the handle like I've heard of others doing.

My Mountaineer II is one of my favorite knives. It's the best overall balance of size and weight. Has a great edge and I find the one piece handles very comfortable. Makes no difference to me that it's not a good chopper. That's what my hatchet is for!

I've been thinking about the Mountaineer I for some time now. The Mountaineer II is much bigger than I like, justa personel preference of mine. It is a great, straight forward design.
Now if I could just find a good reason, excuse, or...whatever, to buy another fixed blade.

Having owned and used my Mountaineer II for a few years now I decided to buy the Mountaineer I for my 8 year old son.He enjoyssitting around and whittling with it.I own alot of knives, custom and production, but tis one is the one that always ends up on my belt when going into the woods. It has the best feel and it just looks good too.

The Mountaineer II is really so very right for so much that I do afield. The single cross guard is a feature I use frequently, choing up for the finer work. Their are other knives that I own that are better at one thing or another, many being Chris reeve knives of the One Piece Range but this one is the one that just seems to get to go out the most. I echo the positive statements above!

That is great that you bought your son a Mountaineer I. Talk about starting him out right!
