Guys, i was thinking of getting a new fixed blade to use for hiking/backpacking. I have plenty of other fixed blades, but wa slookign at getting CR. What woudl you suggest? Somethign that would be easy to carry, not too heavy, but yet be able to perform a myriad of outdoor tasks (chopping, whittling, etc. etc. etc.)?

Thanks
Sincerely
John

I use a Proj I for my main bush balde and love it. I also carry a Mountaineer I for smaller more delicate tasks. The Mountaineer I is a recent purchase but I love it and will be using it mostly this season.

The grind on the Project I is more suited to hard use IMHO than the Mountaineer ( either model ) but both are quite durable. The Mountaineer grind I think more slicer than chopper as such I went for the smaller model.

I would tend toward the Proj I for a harder use blade ( chop, hack ... ) and the Mountaineer for more delicate tasks.

If you are looking for more of a chopper/baton/hard use consider the medium models, Projects I & II. I looked into some of the bigger models (Shadow I, mk II, Sable I ) but think they are too big for regular 'belt' type carry for backpacking. The 5.5" models ( Mountaineer II, mk VI, Shadow IV ) may be a good compromize but to me are too small to be effective choppers.

In general you will be happy with any CRK blade.

Thanks! I appreicate it!! I am thinking of the mtn2. Im just wondering if it can do any chopping?

Is the mountaineer II an alternate for a hatchet ---> IMHO no but then no knife is. A bigger/heavier blade makes a better chopper than a shorter/lighter blade.

If I need an axe, I use an axe...that said I like the Proj I/II size/weigth as a backup or light chopper. If I was not going to carry an axe or hatchet on a particular trip I would be looking at one of the bigger (9") models.

The Mountaineer II for me is the top end of the 'utility' size of blade. I went with the Proj I for its size as a balance between fine control ( 4" ) and chopping power ( 9" ). I used a RAT-5 for the last little while in the bush and find it a good balance as a utility blade - for chopping no way.

If you are looking for a chopper go bigger but for a all-a-round balde for bush use a 5" is a great size --? Mountaineer II. For light chopping you will be fine, for fire prep also good. A CRK 1 piece in my mind can take more abuse than a lesser blade - my knives are users not collectors items so go for it :)
