Mounting a BK-6 on a CamelBak Pack?

As I am reconfiguring my bug out bag, I am considering mounting my BK-6 Patrol Machete in it's sheath semi-permanently to the side of my CamelBak Motherlode hydration pack.

The pack has the standard Molle straps on each side as shown:

Unfortunately, the old BK-6 sheath is pretty simple and doesn't have Molle or many versatile attachment points, only the slot for the belt and the three little grommets on the three tabs as shown:

So, the question is, what do you all think is a good way to attach the sheath to the pack? I'd like it to be pretty secure, but be able to remove it without too much struggle. So far I have thought about lacing it on through the grommets and wrapping around the sheath and Molle straps with a bunch of paracord, but that seems a little hokey and would take awhile to dismount. I can also envision using a combination of paracord and black zip-ties. I always like to carry zip-ties in my survival kits, so replacing some after being cut off would be OK.

But before I start trying things, have any of you Beckerheads ever mounted this type of simple sheath on a Molle pack? How did you do it? How did it work? If you haven't done it, what would your ideas be. I am looking for a wide range of options before I start anything, and maybe running down a wrong path that someone has run before.

Thanks in advance!

MOLLE-Loks, like the ones that come with ESEE sheaths (made by BladeTech I think) and black zip ties.

Zip ties and 550 man. They side compression straps cinched down a lot will help with eliminating movement. I haven't tried mounting my BK6 to anything yet, I'm still searching for a better sheath/scabbard set up. I have mounted an Ontario machete with zip ties and 550 though.

Google: annex clips. Eberlestock uses 'em they come in "permanent" and "non-permament"...they basically slip on to webbing or can be permanently mounted to 1" webbing. They click open and dis-mount easily with one handed operation.

Paracord, go threw the molle and around the knife sheath in a pattern down the pack.

Zip ties! I never thought about that - now I get to remount the knife on my BOB this weekend. Good! It's cold enough around here that I'd look forward to some indoor project.:)

Thanks for all the ideas. It looks like I will try a combo of 550 and zip ties (since I already have them on hand.) If it comes out anywhere near acceptable I'll post a couple of pics.

Also Ranger bands are great. Go with the poor guy option though, bicycle inner tube. Go with the road bike tires, smaller diameter than the mtn. bike tires.

Zip ties work nice, but the cheap ones have a tendency to get brittle and break. Do yourself a favor next time you're in the hardware store: goto the electrical section and get a package of those. They are a little more expensive, but they are way tougher than the harbor freight .99c jobbies. They come in pretty colors, too.

I'd mount that sucker on a 10/22, bayonet style, and be done with it. :D

the scabbard for the BK6 kinda sucks :>

i'd find a kydex bender to make you one, that has attachment points you like :)

in particular, you could then just weave paracord back and forth on one side to give you a kind of square grid to work with, and then all sorts of straps and such can go underneath. mix and match.

I tried a quick and dirty lash up this afternoon. I wrapped about 10 wraps of 550 cord around the sheath just below and secured to the top grommet tab. I had a couple of old ALICE clips lying around, so I slipped them under the cord at the back of the sheath and then attached them to the two uppermost molle tabs at the top of the left side of the pack. That actually secured the top part of the sheath pretty well. I then just used two 6" black zip ties to secure the other two grommet tabs to the nearest molle loops. Holds things down pretty well. With the side compression straps cinched up it doesn't move around at all.

Tomorrow I'll take a little walk around the neighborhood with it and see if it jiggles loose at all. If not I'll snap a few pics before the games start tomorrow.

HAHA I almost made the first reply to your question suggesting ALICE clips but then thought..Nah hes probably looking for something a little more exciting than that considering what a nice pack hes rigging it too.

Here's some pics of what I tried yesterday.

I wrapped about 10 wraps of 550 cord around the sheath secured to and just below the grommet tab. That gave me something to slip the ALICE clips under.

Then I used the ALICE clips to attach to the upper molle strips. There was a lot of vertical play there and will have to do something about that.

So now we have the sheath secured to the side of the pack, but it's a bit loose and has a lot of vertical play.

So I used a black zip tie to fasten the middle grommet tab to one of the molle straps. Did the same thing to the bottom grommet tab on the bottom of the sheath.

Now it doesn't have any vertical play, and the compression straps keep it from flopping around.

So it works, but I'm not happy with it. There are more possibilities with 550 cord and zip ties. I think I will do another wrap of 10 wraps of 550 cord ust below the second grommet tab. Then instead of ALICE clips I will find some of the tack ties or other molle fastners and try them. They should fix the vertical play issue and give a bit more of a secure attachment that can still be dismounted readily. That will also give me some more emergency paracord in my kit.

So back to the drawing board. Still open to other ideas and comments.

Yes, I think I am going to end up with something like that. I want it to be secure but detachable without too much effort.

They look like another good possibility.

Paracord, go threw the molle and around the knife sheath in a pattern down the pack.

That would work, and one could probably come up with a pattern that is pleasing to the eye as well as physically secure, but it would probably take awhile to dismount the sheath. Has a lot of potential, though.

Easy, Let me buy the BK6, problem solved

Sorry fella, not happening soon.:( I'm still pissed that I sold my Brute to a friend and can't remember who!

Oh yes. As a retired elec engr that has done a lot of outside plant work I am fully aware of the differences in zip ties. I always get the black UV resistant ones from an electrical supplier.

I'd mount that sucker on a 10/22, bayonet style, and be done with it. :D

Hmmmmmm, stand by for photos!

Believe it or not, this is the first time I have tried the multi-quote response to a thread feature. Sure hope I did it right! :o
