Mounting a CB antenna on a car

I could use some advice... I have a CB in my car and it needs an external antenna to be useful. Right now I am using a "through-the-glass" antenna mounted on my windshield, but it sucks for several reasons. For various reasons it isn't practical for me to use a trunk, roof, or hood mount.

What I'm wondering about is whether anyone makes a bracket that will allow me to mount a trucker-style antenna on the end of my Yakima roof rack's cross bars. The "mirror mount" rigs I've seen are all designed for relatively thin bars (usually under 1/2") and my cross bars are just over 1" in diameter. Can anyone point me toward some hardware that might solve my problem?

What about a magnetic mount?

I think Radio Shack still sells one model.

I used to have a standard mirror mount attached to the roof rack on my old station wagon;only thing I needed was longer bolts, and it worked well.

Good luck.

Hmmmm. Lets dust off my memory on this old topic..

The very best antenna for CB use is 102" whip
mounted at the rear of the car. Back then some
folk's would drill a hole in the body to mount the
antenna base (shudder) but I fashioned a HEAVY
bracket that would mount to a bumper or frame bolt
at the rear. Added a couple tennis balls to keep
the antenna from slapping the body in the wind and
talked my butt off for a about a 50 mile range.

Now I know newer cars would look sorta odd with
this setup but it is still today the best non-
damaging setup for CB use.

Check out offroading boards like www.4x4wire.com or www.pirate4x4.com, etc. There's lots of CB use off-road and people mount antennas all sorts of ways. I used part of a mirror mount as a plate to mount my antenna to my brushguard. There are mounts that bolt to offroad bumpers like TJM and ARB. They clamp to the 1"+ bars of the integrated brush guards.

Thanks to all for the great information! I hadn't realized that a "mirror mount" would work on my roof rack, but many of them do seem designed to handle it.

Now I just have to figure out which one to buy...

It looks like I would be best of with a model that provides its own ground plane. I am currently leaning toward Firestik's "no ground plane" 3-way mount kit. Does anyone have experience with either the kit or the company?

Any other suggestions for kits I should look at?

Thanks again!
