Mounting guard

Hi guys,

I am putting a guard on a blade which does not have a ricasso. In order to get a tight fit, am I right in assuming the tang has to be triangular rather that square? Seems like a silly question, but I did a guard for this blade in the normal way, and I had gaps at the bottom of the guard/blade. Any advice?

On the bottom where the guard meets the tang in the guard slot, file a slot on the tang the width of the guard so it fits up snug. That way the tang will be down below the bottom of the guard. Hope that makes sense.

Scott, read your post quite a few times, still don't get it. Sorry-can you explain further to this newbie? :o Post on message if you would rather.

If the blade bevel goes all the way to the guard,it is easier to notch the tang and slip the slotted guard up on the blade. It can't extend past the spine this way,but you can get a real tight fit.

Ahh, I think I undestand what you guys are saying, but I was originally asking how to fit a full guard, or how to slide a guard up a hiden tang onto a blade without a ricasso. If we are talking apples and oranges, my bad

Dave,
If you are using a full guard, then the tang has to have the same shape as the blade at the guard area.Cut the slot in the guard the same and you will have a snug joint. On knives with handles wider than the blade, sometimes you could actually fit the guard from the point end of the blade, instead of from the tang end.
