Mounting my "new" anvil?

I am delighted at my recent just purchase of a Haybudden 70# anvil at a flea market ($75). Up till now I have been using a piece of 5" steel plate - this new addition certainly makes me look more like a bladesmith! I cleaned it up and will start on a 2x4 stacked base tonight. How should I attach the anvil to the stand?

Thanks,

I have a couple of anvils. One is on the traditional ....log. It works OK.

The big gun is on a piece of 16" cardboard forming planted 36" in the ground. I filled it with concrete and set foundation bolts in the wet concrete matching the holes in the anvil.

After it setup (Give it a couple of weeks at least and don't go whole hog for a couple of months) Bolt the anvil down and go to it. It is amazing how much power you lose with a cushy base.

Congradulations on the Score! Thats a great price for a Hay Budden! I just picked one up for 100.00 and I'm thrilled with it. Mine's 185 lbs so I haven't even bothered with lashing it down. It doesn't seem to jump around much.
What I have seen though (and what mine came with), is two pieces of 1" wide, thin strapping steel criss crossing and nailed or screwed into the sides of the "stump" one for each end of the anvil crossing in the center. Good luck!

I saw a Wayne Goddard video last night. He has two pieces of flat steel (one on each side) bolted through the legs and into the base, Looks solid.

I am no expert on this but I have experimented with different methods of securing a light anvil. I have had the best luck using 2 sections of chain (one on each side with a little wrap-around) and then running bolts through the end links to attach the chain to the wooden base. For additional holding power I run the bolts in at a slight angle with the heads angled away from the direction of pull on the chains.

Let's say I forged some brackets, would I need to normalize anneal and quench and temper them?

that Nimba is mounted on a really nice base. think i will do mine like that, i like the fact that it is very "narrow". my current setup (stump) sometimes gets in the way, too wide etc.

was also thinking about placing some sheet lead between the base and the anvil. would allow anvil to settle in and add to stability etc....
