Mouse Cleaning

I've had a Wegner Mouse since May. It is one of my EDC's and I must admit the most used. However,it spends a great deal of time in the pockets of my pants. Therein lies the problem. I use White Lightning with good effect but I can now hear what can only be described as a 'gritty' sound when I open the blade.

How can I effectively clean and dry the knife?

All help is appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Jack,

I've had the best success cleaning my folders by just soaking them in a pan of hat water and dish soap - opening and closing them, repeatedly, while holding them under the water seems to get the gunk out of the mechanism. If there are some bits of 'gunk' that don't want to rinse out, I use a small brush and a toothpick to get into the grooves etc.

I just rinse them under some warm running water (while opening and closing) and let dry to finish.

If you do this everytime before you relubricate it takes no time as the 'gunk' never has time to accumulate with repeates lubings.

Hope this helps.

PS: If this is the first time you've cleaned them - it may take some time to get the grit out of the mechanism.

I use a product called "Gun Scrubber". You'll want to test it beforehand to see if it destroys the finish. I've used it on a Ladybug without hurting anything though.

Thanks Bill, I will give that a try today. I was concerned about the drying aspect of the procedure. I live in the desert and the air is very dry so 'drip dry' it is.

Thanks Frank, I will look into the 'Gun Scrubber" product. There is gun shop in town and I will go visit.

I am new to the 'folder' world and I figured there was plenty of help on this forum.

Thanks again.

Granted it's an old, messy, and primitive technique, but sometimes, (for me anyway) the old spray can of WD-40 with the straw attached can do wonders. It combines the saturating part of the soap and water technique, but the force of the stream can wash out the stuff that comes loose, as it comes out. White lightning is great, but it doesn't MOVE anything. It just seeps in.

Anyway, Hold the knife in a good, BIG, THICK rag,(unless you don't mind oily fingers, in which case, forget the rag, but it also helps keep the oil from making its way to the floor, your pants, your shirt, your shoes, and your cat), jam the lil straw in between the handles towards the pivot, work the knife back and forth in the spray, and spray away... just don't smoke while you're doing it :)

Because B/Cs "gun scrubber" contains a solvent, it will attack most plastics...this includes many washers used in knives. However, using a can of this stuff with the supplied "straw" works wonders... I use it for cleaning my all-metal knives that have phosphor-bronze washers (CRK sebenza), or those without washers (Spydie Mouse), but few others... After using this, I drip some rem-oil in the pivot area and away I go...

Canned 'air' that you would use to clean computer parts works great also. I normally give my EDC folders a shot every couple of days. Cleans out the worst of the grit/fluff, fats and easy.

Really funky knives just get hot water and maybe a couple of drops of dishsoap worked into the pivot before they hit the water.
