I don't remember who brought up the idea of using a mouse pad for honing, but it ROCKS.

I had to make one; the wife threatened my life, liberty, or any pursuit of "happines" if I scarfed hers. `Went to Wally World and picked up some thick (3/16 inch) craft foam, glued some old denim (borrowing some one elses idea) to it and voila' a blue jeans mouse pad. :D

I put a buffing compound to it and tried it out on a blade I'd had trouble with getting a decent edge. Now I'm in danger of loosing all the hair on my arms.

I have heard that using the mousepad with waterproof sandpaper is the best way to put a convex edge on a knife. Any experience with this? Does your edge look convex?

Thanks,

Charles

Charles,
You can use a mousepad, a leather strop, or just about any material that has some give to it. The important parts to remember with sandpaper are stroking edge trailing, and don't press too hard. If you press too hard, you are never going to get the knife very sharp because you will be rounding the edge off.
