I have a lansky that I can get a pretty good edge on my small knifes with but could never get it to work as well on longer blades. So I tried the mouse pad and sandpaper on some of my cheaper nicked up blades to start with. I went from 600, 800, 1000, to 1500, then leather strop. I sprayed a little wd40 on them and worked my way down. It worked better than I thought it would. I had one 440 blade that had a small chip in it close to the tip and I got it really fast, so I thinking it may be taking off metal faster than I thought???

I've heard other say that you get a convex edge sharpening this way, but from what I've read a convex edge is a good thing.

Anyone else use this method...any good pointers?

I've found this series of vids extremely helpful. He's sharpening a Bark River in the vids, which is a full convex grind, so you may want to use a slightly higher angle when doing a knife with just a convex edge bevel . Just play around with it with each knife you sharpen and see what works in each case.

I use a mouse pad and a firmer piece of material used to line drawers for sharpening my convex Barkie...works great...just be careful with the mouse pad not to apply too much pressure as it is possible to round or dull the edge as it is moved across the pad.
