mouse pad sharpening?

I'm new and have been lurking and asking some questions. I'm going to give mouse pad sharpening a try. I work at a body shop so I have access to sandpaper up to 3,000 grit. I was wondering after watching some videos, do you pull the knife to you or push it away from you? I have seen it done both ways. Seems like to me pulling it back towards you , down the blade to the edge is best not starting at the edge and pushing down.

No. You push instead of pull, just as if you were using a typical sharpening stone.

I don't know much but I usally have a knife kinda sharp to get to the mouse paid sharpening that I "drag" the knife away from the edge so I don't cut the paper or the strop when I move to that step.

On a soft backing like a mouse pad, use an edge-trailing stroke (edge always following the spine).
