When I was a kid and would go out with the Old Man packin' in the weeds, he always brought a mouse trap, after a few years of goin' out in the woods huntin' I came across his mouse trap in his back pack and when I asked why he carried one he said he used them as triggers for snares and stuff, any one ever do the same, how did you use it?

In AK and the Yukon we used mouse traps as part of an improvised alarm system around our tents. Drill a hole through them, screw them to a tree, and run some monofilament line around your camp.

Dave Canterbury of the Pathfinder school carries a rat trap or two. He says that they are about 90% effective on squirrel-size game whereas snares and other improvised traps have a much lower success rate.

I'd sooner carry a rat trap as a larger trap can also catch small critters where as a small trap will likely not catch and kill a larger critter. Never used them as triggers but that is a good idea !

Used them plenty of times for.....well catchin rats, LOL !
