I just finished watching the WW2 movie called Gung Ho! During the training section, the narrator(their commanging officer) mentions that one of the Marine Raiders "is a Filipino, an expert with the knife. He teaches us..." So way back in 1943, even Hollywood knew about the FMA's effectiveness.
